DTS HD-MA Question

I just picked up Pan's Labyrinth yesterday and noticed it has 7.1 DTS HD Master Audio. But only in Spanish with or without English Subtitles. To get English only it uses DTS.
I was so thrilled to find an HD DVD using Master Audio I just bought it without thinking it might not have an English DTS MA option in English.
My question is, does anyone know of any HD DVD's using DTS HD Master Audio? Besides some foreign releases?
These are the ones I know about:
Spatial Dynamics, Space or Dream of Life, Mysterious Aqua and The Way To Paradise. These are not really movies. But what I read you need a 7.1 setup to get the full effect. Which may be the case with Pan's Labyrinth as well.
Alas, I only have a 5.1 system.

I watched The Orphange last night, another Del Toro movie, spanish, etc... The DTS HD-MA was superb. It's one of the few movies that used the back speaker a lot!
I don't know of any HD DVDs using it though. Rumor is that T2 import is using it.

Yeah it's mainly the foreign titles which have the master audio, while the domestic movies have DTHD. Probably about the same percentage of foreign movies have DTS-HD MA as the domestic titles having DTHD (about 30%?) The Studio Canal releases have it for example. As for 7.1, I only know of two titles which have it (Pans Labyrinth and the German T2), but I think there's one more also that has it.

I checked out Pan's Labyrinth HD DVD also and was stuck with the Spanish version of DTS HD MA.

Brenner, I forget, does the Onkyo 805 actually decode master audio or does it bitstream only? I've got quite a few imports with master audio, haven't really thought about it, but either I should get the Onkyo or a receiver that decodes MA.

bruce, do you have an XA2? If so, let it do the decoding for ya :) It sounds damn good

Yeah it sure does at that, but I heard that the upgrade only bitstreams master audio and doesn't decode it. I probably couldn't tell the diff anyway, being that I'm an apartment dweller with the throttle on the volume control. :(

Bruce,
It does both. It will encode or pass thru. I have it set to pass thru and use the receiver to encode. After all, I want the receiver to tell me what it's doing. Using the Onkyo for encoding the receiver just shows PCM.
Using the receiver for encoding it shows DTS HD MSTA on the screen. The cool factor outweighs which one does a better job.:D

Have you made a sound comparison between PCM and DTS HD MA via bitstream? Would interested to know if the naked ear could actually detect a difference.

Sorry. I replied about the Onkyo, not the XA-2. That's what I get for drinking Rum and posting.:banghead:

I have not yet. When I'm home for more than a weekend I will do an AB and post the difference, if any.
I have Total Recall, T2 and Mulholland Falls with DTS HD MA. I also have the first two in S DVD. So I can AB those as well. DTS HD MA should be a big improvement over DD.

The Onkyo 905 certainly decodes and outputs DTS-HD MA 7.1 from my XA2 and unfortunately, I do not have the back speakers to hear the back channels! :crying:

I did and heard no difference IMO so I just let my Denon do the work.

The DTS-HD MA was mostly on the HD DVD import titles, but they are on all the BD Fox titles in the US. It is also on quite a few New Line and Lionsgate titles plus others. The only time you will mostly here a sound difference with DTS-HD MA, DTHD, and uncompressed audio is when they are done in lower or higher bit rates. Spiderman 3 is a good example. Specs below. I used the scene when Flint Marco becomes Sandman and the DTHD is a lot more fuller with bass and louder overall than the PCM track because of the 24-bit encoding.

Audio Formats
English PCM 5.1 Surround (48kHz/16-Bit/4.6mbps)
English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 Surround (48kHz/24-bit)
