Universal joining Blu-ray bandwagon in the summer
Thu Apr 17, 2008 2:32am EDT

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Universal Studios, once Hollywood's top backer of the doomed HD DVD video format, will soon release all its new videos on the victorious Blu-ray rival at the same time as its standard DVDs.

The studio is set to announce Thursday that the program will kick off in the summer with the recent box office flop "Doomsday."

Universal's Blu-ray strategy includes plans to release about 40 titles in the second half of the year.

Among them are the studio's five big feature films of the summer, including "The Incredible Hulk," with Edward Norton, William Hurt and Liv Tyler; "Wanted," an action thriller starring James McAvoy and Angelina Jolie; "Hellboy II: The Golden Army"; "Mamma Mia," the adaptation of the musical starring Meryl Streep; and the sequel "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor," with Brendan Fraser and Jet Li.

Universal officially will enter the Blu-ray market July 22 with a trio of films from its "Mummy" action-adventure franchise: "The Mummy" and "The Mummy Returns," both starring Fraser, and the spinoff "The Scorpion King," with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.

Also planned for domestic Blu-ray before the year is up are the catalog titles "American Gangster," "Knocked Up," "The 40-Year-Old Virgin," "Miami Vice," "End of Days," "U-571" and "Land of the Dead," among others.

Universal had been HD DVD's biggest studio backer ever since the next-generation optical disc format came to market in April 2006. But when Toshiba pulled the plug on the format in February, the studio wasted no time switching its allegiance to Sony's Blu-ray.

:yippee:

It's good to hear that they finally made the decision to move forward and continue making movies in HD.

No new titles on the list that I'm interested, but I'm also glad to see that they are re-releasing some of the titles that have already been released on HD DVD. At least that way, newcomers to the blu-ray format will have the opportunity to see those films in HD too.

Good to finally put that to rest.

I know Doomsday flopped at the cinema, but I'm happy I'll get to rent it in HiDef. Not to mention IRONMAN!!!! Hellboy 2 should be great too, I really enjoyed the first one.

Wonder if they will touch up American Gangster. I think it can look better than it did on HD DVD version(not the formats fault).

Good to see they are bringing out some decent catalog titles as well as the new releases.

Now we just need Paramount to hop on board and give me a 3D Beowulf!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I remember someone posting a thread about it a while back,(I think it was Lee) but I don't think anyone at this forum actually ordered it. I think I may actually just have to do that. It is an import though.

I'm afraid Ironman and Hellboy 2 are Paramount aren't they? :( COME ON DAMMIT! I can't believe the whores of HD aren't already whorring out tbh.

Looking forward to Universal getting back into HDM, 40 titles this year is a nice solid flow too, they'll really bolster BDs Q3/4 lineup, just in time to help encourage new Blu-ray owners for Xmas.

Hellboy II is mentioned in the OP. I think they changed the franchise from Para to Uni, which did cause a bit of a stir among the blu-ray fans last year. Doesn't matter now (or let's say it's for the better, as long as Para are still enjoying their lazy beauty sleep. )

Judging by the "tone" I have seen here so far, I would guess the latter is more the reason. People post here at all hours of the day/night.

The only people in this thread so far (besides the one off by Lee) seem to be the majority of blu supporters on this site.

Finally the first Universal Blu-Rays. Since Universal was pretty famous for favoring quantity of quality and using poor masters for many HD-DVD catalogs hopefully Universal will make new transfers for the Blu-Rays. Also since Blu-Ray doesn't have the 1.5 megabyte per second dolby plus tracks that were popular on HD-DVD I hope that they simply give lossless audio to the Blu-Rays. Doing so could get a few double dips so business wise it makes sense to do so.

Paramount were waiting

I hate to say it, but I honestly think The Hulk is going to bomb. I watched a making of trailer the other day and the hulk, as with the first movie, looked incredibly fake and CGI like. It certainly might do well, but I highly doubt it. The new Mummy needs to do well to resurrect Frasier's career since he has done nothing of importance in years. Hellboy 2 also has a chance for success so let's hope it as good as the second Spider-man.

I have a similar feeling about Hulk. Where is the promotion? I have only seen Iron Man stuff. Not a good sign imo. It comes out 6/13, not many commercials or anything. Its too bad too, I thought the presence of Ed Norton would at least make up for any shortcomings. We shall see.

I enjoyed HBI, so I am curious what HBII will turn out to be like.

Those are the only two I have any interest in.

About time Universal. I thought I was gonna start going through withdrawals! While I won't be buying any of the titles already on HD DVD (I already own em :o) I will be buying the next Mummy movie, as well as Wanted. Maybe the Hulk depending on how it is, as I am a huge Norton fan.

It sucks that my Mummy trilogy is going to be mismatched. Red, Red, Blue... I think I'll have to go out and buy an empty HD DVD case for it.

Universal Unveils Blu-ray Disc Plans
Author: THOMAS K. ARNOLD

Posted: April 17, 2008
Email this Story to Friend

Beginning this summer with Doomsday, Universal Studios Home Entertainment will release all of its new releases the same day on DVD and Blu-ray Disc, division president Craig Kornblau announced April 17.

The studio that was once Hollywood’s top supporter of the failed HD DVD format threw its support behind Blu-ray the day format developer Toshiba officially threw in the towel two months ago, but without any details.

Now, Kornblau said, he’s ready to go public with Universal Studio’s Blu-ray strategy, which includes plans to release approximately 40 titles in the second half of this year.

Among them: the studio’s five big feature films of the summer, including The Incredible Hulk, with Edward Norton, William Hurt and Liv Tyler; Wanted, the action thriller from director Timur Bekmambetov that stars Morgan Freeman and Angelina Jolie; Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy II: The Golden Army; Mamma Mia, the adaptation of the Abba musical, starring Meryl Streep; and the sequel The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, with Jet Li, Maria Bello and Michelle Yeoh joining the returning Brendan Fraser and John Hannah.

“We’re thrilled that our preliminary slate of Blu-ray offerings comprises such a brilliant collection of high-def-centric fare,” Kornblau said.

Universal will officially enter the Blu-ray Disc market on July 22 with a trio of films from its “Mummy” action-adventure franchise: The Mummy and The Mummy Returns, both starring Fraser, and the spinoff The Scorpion King, with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

Also planned for domestic Blu-ray Disc before the year is up are catalog titles American Gangster, Knocked Up, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Miami Vice, End of Days, U-571 and Land of the Dead, among others.

“We are taking great care in mining our library for those properties we feel precisely hit that high-def ‘sweet spot’ and best deliver on the promise of providing consumers with the state-of-the-art home-viewing experience,” Kornblau said.

The second season of the hit TV series “Heroes” will be Universal Studios’ first global Blu-ray Disc release, with a worldwide release date set for Aug. 26, the same day as the DVD. Universal Studios Home Entertainment will release the title in North America, while Universal Pictures International Entertainment, NBC Universal’s international home entertainment arm, will release it in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Japan.

Also coming Aug. 26 will be season one of “Heroes,” which Universal released on HD DVD exactly one year before.

Universal’s international Blu-ray slate will consist of 29 titles this year, including the five big theatricals as well as such catalog titles as The Mummy, Gladiator, American Gangster, Miami Vice, Casino and The Thing.

“I am delighted that highly anticipated feature films and TV titles from one of Universal’s strongest lineups ever will be available on Blu-Ray for the first time,” said Eddie Cunningham, president of Universal Pictures International Entertainment.

Universal had been HD DVD’s biggest studio backer ever since the next-generation optical-disc format came to market in April 2006. But when Toshiba conceded defeat in the format war on Feb. 19 Kornblau wasted no time in switching his allegiance.

He’s also firmly committed to BD Live — which allows Blu-ray Discs to be connected to the Internet for variety of Web-enabled special features, from additional content to real-time chats with fellow viewers — although the studio is not yet ready to announce any firm plans.

“Creating Web-enabled content for our Blu-ray releases is a top priority at Universal,” Kornblau said. “We are aggressively pursuing some very exciting opportunities for our tentpole titles that are nothing short of groundbreaking. Our BD Live features will create a wholly immersive, interactive environment that will connect movie fans in innovative ways.”

The HD DVD format Universal exclusively supported for so long offered Web connectivity from the start, and the studio aggressively exploited this ability through such features as a virtual store that allowed viewers to buy items they saw in the movie with a couple of clicks of the remote.

This is great news and I hope they release ALL the HD DVD titles already released on BD so all the BD only people can buy them also to enjoy. I would like to know what other formally HD DVD exclusive titles will be released on BD this year or early next year. At this point any HD movies they have already released I would prefer to buy on BD at this point so I can be sure to pass on the HD DVD version but still know I can get it in HD.

I am glad I didn't already double dip on the Mummy series since I would prefer to have them all on the same format. ;)

There seems to be a strange gap between those who voted "The PS3 Rocks!!!" and "The PS3 Rocks SOOO Hard!!!". No. Much more scientific than that. This poll takes into account the checks and balances of the human way of thinking spanning the last 70 decades. Along with things like Lunar positioning/Tidal times, the relative distance of Jupiter to the earth during the time each vote was cast, along with a very deep set of controlled setting measures.

Here's a link to my study.

Everyones input would greatly help this poll. The results are going to become the foundation of mankind's existence beyond the 21st century.

FWIW, Paramount titles are back in stock on BD at Amazon. I ordered Sahara as a gift for my dad(big Clive Cussler fan), and I expected to have to order it from a marketplace seller, but lo and behold, it was in stock directly from Amazon.

Guess all this rules out selling my BD copy of Shooter for hundreds of dollars one day though.:banghead: ;)

I'm glad to see movies like American Gangster making the jump to BluRay quickly and not years from now. I can't wait for them to release Jurassic Park!!

To celebrate Universal's move to Bluray, I bought myself another PS3 but a 40 GB version. I still have the 60 GB in my room. :D
