New here...Is the Samsung 81 series really the best TV out there?

I currently own an old MITSUBISHI WS-55511. I am so sick of it, I own the following a ps3, HD DVD player( I know big mistake), HD Camcorder, DirecTV HD with the MLB Pass and the NFL Sunday Ticket...and I can't get the best picture possible at 1080i.
So I am thinking on upgrading and have done alot of research and I am aware of the Pioneer Kuro and the XBR4. But it seems to me like the Samsung 81 series is as good, if not better than those and others. Can anyone comment on that? I came here to see if anyone can change my mind about this TV. :D

Samsung - 46" 1080p Flat-Panel LCD HDTV
Model: LN-T4681F
for 3199.99

Is it a good deal?

Thanks in advance. Your insights and knowledge is welcomed.

Any plasma whether it be Pioneer or Panasonic will be/is better.

Panasonic really?
Please tell me more. I have been debating on getting the Sony Bravia XBR4 or Samsung 81 series but no one has ever mentioned a Panasonic to me.

Sounds like you have already narrowed it down pretty well.
Also that you are looking mainly at LCD sets.
The LCD vs Plasma debate will continue for a very long time.

In any event, the 81 series are no doubt excellent sets, and I have always liked this comment from the link that Pappy posted:

Michael Trei, Contributing Technical Editor
From the minute I walked into the room, I was impressed by how closely Al had matched the images on these two very different sets. Particularly with brighter scenes, the differences were subtle enough that they would be tough to spot under any circumstances except in a side-by-side shootout like this one.
Even though the plasma may have "won", the obviously unbiased conclusion suggests that a quality LCD like the 81 series is more than a viable option for anyone looking for "the best".

Thanks Scott. To be honest with you, I know a little about HDTV's but a friend of is always talking about TV's and swears that he knows more than most of the guys at Best Buy or Circuit City. Anyway he has pointed out that Samsung for a while and really love the way Blu-Ray Moves and PS3 games look...Simply Amazing!

Yes, true, but as Scott says, there is an excellent quote from sound and vision that states each are excellent TV's. You can't go wrong with either obviously. Many of us who have subscribed to sound and vision and previously stereo review consider their tests valid and a good baseline for decision making.

Its funny how LEDs let it get deeper blacks...but if its viewing say...a planet in one corner, you'll notice the gradient in black from the side with the LEDs off and the side with them on. Honestly, plasma is where its at for black.

I have heard that Samsung took the 5781F off of the standard pricing list. this means the dealer can sell the set for less than Samsung standardized it at. The dealer said they are coming out with a new version, I think by accident, of the 5781F.

Has anyone else heard of this. Where can i look to find up-to- date info.?

You'll probably find that a lot of people know more than those guys! I would say that it's not a stretch that your friend knows more than at least some of the people at Best Buy or Circuit City. On this board there is probably at least a dozen people who I tend to see what they have to say about the topics you will find here. I know I have taken in more knowledge about HDTV than I knew (or thought I knew) before.
