Quick question! XS955 vs. XBR960

Ahoy!

So I'm looking at getting a 30XS955 because the size is just right and it's a fair bit cheaper (and lighter) than it's bigger brother the 34XS955. So far as I understood, the two use the same technology. The difference was in the size.

Then I come across the 34XBR960 while surfing around and reading these forums. I can't make out the difference between this model and the 34XS955. Is there some sort of superior technology used in the XBR? Unfortunately, it doesn't look like there's a 30" version. If there is a difference, is it worth paying the extra couple hundred? The extra size doesn't really matter to me, but the picture quality surely does.

Thanks, in advance, for any information!

Thanks, in advance, for any information! First of all, the 34XBR model has a OTA hd tuner and a CATV HD tuner the 955 lacks. Secondly its only $200 list price more which means about $160 more. I figure the HD tuner is worth that so why take a chance that the XS955 ISNT AS GOOD in some other way? I could not get an straight answer from sony customer service so I didnt risk buying the lesser model for only the very small overall lower price... Sometimes the sets are the same, just feature differences, sometimes they are not. I still dont know or care at this point, I got the tuner so even if they are the same otherwise I dont feel like
it really matters as the tuner has come in handy for me for a few channels I dont get on catv yet....

They both have the same tube technology...the XBR has more features like cable card, picture-in-picuture, dolby digital, picture freeze, etc.

XS955 has the cable card also the same tube. Better warranty with the 960 though(2 years?)

Not true, they both come with ATSC and NTSC tuners. The KV-34HS420 model is an HD monitor that lacks the ATSC tuner.

Strange, their website specs is listed for both models and cable card is not listed under the XS955.

Thank you for the info, gentlemen. JCO: while the price difference between the 34XS955 and the XBR960 might only be roughly 200 bucks, it is $800 more expensive than the 30XS955. The extra 4" and little features (picture freeze, etc.) aren't worth that, to me. So if the tube technology truly is the same, I think I'll stick with the 30XS955. All the same, thank you for the suggestion!

Info I got on the 34XS955

Experience the breathtaking clarity of HDTV broadcasts with the integrated ATSC tuner. DRC™ MultiFunction circuitry even upconverts lower resolution signals to near-HD quality, and plug-and-play CableCARD™ capability means you can pick up digital signals through your cable system, too.

So I guess that validates both of our points

Good luck with the 30XS955. One day I may get one for my bedroom....I did not like the Samsung P3075 after looking at my 34XS955.

Only the XBR has Firewire output for recording HDTV.
