Alvin sells 2.6 million on DVD, Blu-ray on first day
By Susanne Ault -- Video Business, 4/2/2008

APRIL 2 | Alvin and the Chipmunks has hit a high note for 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, selling 2.6 million copies in its first day of release on DVD and Blu-ray Disc.

Fox is touting the movie as the best-selling title of 2008.

This milestone coincides with Alvin being crowned "Favorite Movie" at the recent Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards. Theatrically, Alvin and the Chipmunks grossed $350 million.

To keep up the title's momentum, Fox will present a mall stage tour starring the singing characters of Alvin, Simon and Theodore.

The Alvin franchise is proving to be enduring for fans, as the trio's albums have sold 43 million copies across 16 albums. The 1983 Alvin and the Chipmunks TV series has been broadcast in 100 countries.

Sooooooooo:

Fox is touting the movie as the best-selling title of 2008.

They are not giving us the DVD/BD ratio. What do you guys think it will be?

Also any thoughts on the little DVD/BD top 20 chart for this week with this "big hitter title" included?

Havn't got a clue but I'm not expecting it to break 100,000 in it's opening week, so I'd say maybe 3% on Blu-ray?

it's a kids movie, that is probably not appealing to the usual BD demografics (but maybe i'm wrong?)

I don't think we will see the ~ 10% we saw for NCFOM or Hitman. But something like 5% might be good. Considering the 2.6 million is for the first day, not for the first week, the numbers would be pretty huge imo. I hope they disclose the ratios.

They will only get disclosed if they favour Blu-ray. Something I highly doubt this will do. Infact, I wouldn't be surprised if we don't even see a top 20 ratio comparison for Alvin week.

Well that new HMM Pie Chart should show this. It was what I was concerned about.

2.6 mil in one day will probably equal about 4 to 5 mil for the first week.

The trailer for this film was enough for me to keep from seeing or buying it.

What I saw of the trailers, I wasn't really impressed. I doubt I will buy this for the grandkids at all. It seems to be a rental for me. Best selling title for 2008? Hmmmmmm

I thought it was an ok movie and it brought back a lot of fond memories of these chipmonks..

Kampsy I made the mistake of buying the soundtrack for my little bro and nephews, so I get to hear helium high pitched voices all the time...... Its funny hearing them try and mimic those voices though

Haha, well I don't even have kids and I still own a couple kid/animation movies on BD/HD DVD. My only excuse is, "it's for the PQ!"

I intend on getting a few of the Pixar titles on Blu-ray when I actually can afford a BD player.

If it sells well on BluRay its because of factor RP. Rich Parents xD

If Amazon's top 100 chart is any indication then the Blu-Ray version may not be doing too well. If I remember correctly it was somewhere in the mid 30s and right now it's 62. The DVD version is still number 1.

Personally id give it somewhere between 6-8% of total sales

Really?

They said they sold 2.5 million on the first day. That would make the 5 day period about 4.5 million.

7% of that is 315,000 BR discs.

That much?

Agreed. And to add, they made a big mistake with the size of the chipmunks. They should have been the size of small children just like the cartoon but instead they made them out as little rodents or rug rats.

Thats Hollywood for you, taking a great idea and screwing around with it.:what:

Best selling HDM title ever and in it's opening week if thats the case. 3.5% would be phenomenal opening weeks sales for BD.
