What many have been waiting for, HBO have confirmed that Band of Brothers will be coming to Blu-ray sometime this year.

There's no street date yet, but HBO Home Video is reportedly planning to bring the Emmy-winning mini-series 'Band of Brothers' to Blu-ray sometime this year.

While reporting on the upcoming standard DVD release of the recent 'John Adam's mini-series, Home Media Magazine spoke with a network rep who confirmed that plans for the Tom Hanks-produced 'Brothers' are underway.

Sofia Chang, Senior VP of Marketing for HBO, revealed that "...a Blu-ray version of 'Band of Brothers' is in the works for later this year."

Although HBO has not issued a release date window or any preliminary tech specs (and as always company plans can change), the news bodes well for a Blu-ray 'Band of Brothers,' a title which remains one of the oft-requested titles in HBO's library.

Needless to say, we'll keep you posted on 'Band of Brothers' and all future HBO Blu-ray titles as soon as details come to us.

We've also added 'Band of Brothers' to the "Release Dates Pending" section of our Blu-ray Release Schedule. Watch this space!

So does anyone wanna sell me their HD DVD version? :D

Awesome news. I haven't seen any episodes yet but I've only heard good things about the series. It's always a good thing to watch something in HD the first time you see it.

I have an expensive DVD set I haven't watched yet. Before that I recorded the entire series to D-VHS and never watched that. I know it is an excellent series, but for some reason I have not yet made the commitment to sit down and watch it. Rather than take a huge hit on the DVD set, I am going to watch it and not buy the Blu-ray set.

Why didn't I ever hear about this being released and why did HBO only release it on HD DVD? I probably would've bought it but now I'm sorta glad I didn't...

It was a $165 Japanese import. Xploited has it if you really want it.

I don't remember what the MSRP was for the DVD set, but at the very least HBO will price it similar to Sopranos Blu-ray, which sells on Amazon for $91. If they add some things to the release over what the current DVD edition has, then expect it to be more. In any case, this is better to own than any 5 Blu-ray movies, so I'd just buy it, whatever the price, and buy 5 less Blu-rays to compensate.

I am going to stick with the SD steel box version I have of this. I like the show a lot but not enough to spend that kind of $ on it to get HD.. yup, SD UC looks good enough to me on this one too

Does that mean it's more of a drama? Not too much action? ;)

I'm sure there is. I was just having fun with Stew. He doesn't think dramas need to be seen in HD.

I just mean that I have watche dit several times on SD, burned out on it and the SD collector's version will suffice for now.. gotta cut back my spending too.. so justifying that UC is good enough is what works :D

I am sure it is and I am going to watch it. I like WWII films, documentaries and TV shows and I expect it to be one of the best I will ever watch. Everytime I get ready to start, something else I haven't seen that doesn't require such a long term commitment grabs my attention and I watch it.

commit to just 1 ep, then get sucked in, is usually the best way of tacking TV series. it's one that I still havn't got around to watching, but there was no way in hell I was justifying £100 on the HD DVD version when the steel tin DVD edition is £20 in B&M stores. But I don't want t obuy the DVD ver now either lol... I'm a mare!

I have seen it only once (on tv). Iirc i liked the show for depicting the german solders not (only) as the usual clichéed nazi-freaks (worthy of Return to Castle Wolfenstein), but as human beings. That left a very positive impression about the show on me. So i might pick up the show on BD sometime.

Being aware that this is a touchy topic, just wanted to state that my comment is not intended to belittle the war, the war crimes and the holocaust commited and tolerated during these dark times.

This is probably one of my favorite films. The first time I watched it i couldn't stop and so I sat down for the entire thing in 1 day. It was rainy so there wasn't anything else really to do. If I get a PS3 I'll pick this up and give my DVD version to my Dad.

This is just a great documentary period. It does depict soldiers from both sides and in a great manner. This is a must have for anyone who like history, especially WWII. It has great sentiment to me because my grandfather was a medic in the War. He didn't paratroop onto Normandy, but rather landed on a boat. He marched his way to Eagles nest. To see what he lived through brings a tear to my eye. I couldn't imagine what these men had to live through, on either side. Great story and a must have. Just my opinion.

Glad I sold my HD DVD set for over $250 before this announcement.

I wonder if the PQ will be different. I imagine so, giving that the JP version was done by a small potatoes studio. But it had dts-HD, this one on had dial-normHD. Oh well. I'm sure it will sound good enough.

HMV UK has the Blu-ray set up for preorder at only 35 pounds, with a November 11th release date. Price seems very reasonable....

The HD DVD was NOT remastered for the transfer; the same master was used for the HD DVD as the original SD DVD release. I read several weeks ago that the BD release will boast a remastered transfer so be prepared for one hell of a ride as I thoroughly enjoyed this series as well.

It depends on the transfer. The HD DVD looks absolutely fabulous, with the grain intact. The BD will certainly not have more detail. Will they remove the grain on the BD version and thus remove (high frequency) detail, like they did on Patton and The Longest Day? After all, BoB does have a LOT of grain, so the temptation will be enormous...

Yeah, price seems suspiciously low, in any case they'll have to honor it. Heck, I may jump on that myself, or do they not ship to the US?

MikeRox
07-14-2008, 10:28 AM
They do ship to the US. I'm not sure it is suspiciously low you know, tis still $70, RRP of £49.99 sounds like it could be about right. They have The Complete Matrix Trilogy priced at £49.99 RRP too (the HD DVD ver was £69.99), Maybe Warner Bros are learning that people want high def box sets, but they don't want to shell out silly sums for them.

Maybe Warner Bros are just getting a lot more competitive with their UK pricing. I was pleasantly surprised by the price of titles such as Pushing Daisies and the Terminator TV series.

No, it's not worth it. You should wait until there are five titles. :D

Just take your time. The titles will be available for a long time, so you don't miss anything. And i predict, that moments like these will happen even more so in the future. :)

Well you'll prolly end up being able to get the Blu-ray ver with a Blu-ray player, for less than the Japanese HD DVD set would cost in the next year or so
