Use receiver without Satellite?

I received a directtv r15-500 from a friend. She never used it so it is basically brand new. I know this unit isn't HD but I thought I would ask anyways...

I don't have satellite and I am not trying to get HD channels through this thing. I just want to know if it is possible to set it up with my regular cable so I can use the dvr feature? Basically, I want to use it as a tuner w/ the ability to record. I hooked it up but I was unable to get past the portion where it looks for a satellite. Is this even possible to do?

Thanks in advance!

My common sense tells me a sat. box is different than a cable box.

So.... I doubt it will unscramble the cable signal.

Just my 2 cents worth (but I bet I am correct) :2cents

There are 2 problems. The first is the tuner on the box is only setup to receive/decode Directv's signal, not the cable signal. The second problem is the DVR function has to be activated through Directv, so it will not record w/o the sat connection. Also, you might want to have your friend make sure it is not a leased box. If it is, Directv will charge the full price if it is not sent back to them.

Directv doesn't want this old equipment back. Several of us have a closet full of old SD receivers.

The R15 DVR has only been around for a couple of years, so I would not think it is considered "old equipment". If it was leased, I'm sure Directv wants it back.
