New to HD... expected better picture quality.

I've searched many threads here and cannot seem to find one to help me. I recently purchased a Samsung Plasma 720P and had Dish install the 711 receiver along with a new dish. I've connected the receiver to the Plasma using an HDMI cable as per the recomendation of the Dish technician. I have the receiver set to 720P but I'm not getting the picture quality I expected on the HD channels. I don't know how to describe the poor picture other than to say it's not as crisp as I had hoped.

Are there more settings I need to check/change to improve the quality?

Thank you in advance for your feedback.

John

Try 1080i setting. That's what I use with my 720p set, and it works better for most channels.
Don't expect HD DVD / Blue Ray quality. Sometimes it's quite spectacular but never at that level.
Local HD broadcast should be even better than Dish channels.

You may be watching an "HD" channel but the program you are watching may be and SD program.

Very few "HD" channels do HD 24/7.

Thanks to all for your suggestion. I did change my receiver setting to 1080i and that made a big improvement. Thanks again!

And if you are still not satisfied or have any other problems, try using component connections as they aren't plagued with the problems HDMI and Dish are known to have.

1080i is the native resolution Dish uses for their HD channels so keep it at that.
