Extra Dish Required for Flint Local HDs?

Just talked to a Dish rep after hearing that our local HD's (Flint, MI) went live yesterday (well, all but NBC, to be precise) and was informed that they were at 61.5 and that my super duper dish only picks up 119, 127, and whatever the third one is.

The long and short of it is that if I want my locals in HD (which is already part of my local package) I have to have a technician come out and install another dish which will cost me 99ish dollars. They said they are willing to waive the fee if I commit to another 2 year contract, but I'm not sure I want to do that.

First thing I wondered, is this just temporary until they get the new satellite in the right orbit?

And second, is there any way to get around this?

Dish should pay for the dish since it gives you additional channels which are on your local package. Don't know if channels are temp or not, but there is no way around getting them (you need 61.5)
Note: superdish would give you either 105/110/119 or 110/119/121, a Dish 1000 would give you 110/119/129, if you already have HD programing, it should be a variation of the Dish 1000.

"Dish should pay for the dish since it gives you additional channels which are on your local package."

I completely agree, the problem is I've called twice now and gotten the same company line about having to cover the cost myself. I'm just at a loss as to why they won't do it. Seems like bad customer service to me. Anyhow, my dish covers 110/119/129, so it's a Dish 1000 I guess, does this make a difference in installing the new one?

I have a Dish 500 and about 2 years ago I needed a wing dicj installed that was pointed at 61.5. I called Dish and they supplied and installed the dish free of charge without a contract extension

I have seen alot of people being charged for a wing dish here lately..I am guessing that they have switched their policies in the last couple of years regarding wing dishes.

I would call them and get transferred to an account specialist and tell them that since they will not supply and install the wing dish free, that you want to cancel your account and you are going to DirecTV...I would bet money on it that you will get it free without the contract extension

I'm a bit confused about the new channel's as well...

I thought they weren't supposed to be added to the programming until April something?

I also am in Mid-Michigan waiting for these HD locals...

I am on my 15th of a 18 month contract and need to know this information before calling them as well...

On my Installation summary it says satellite's 119/110/129 with a 500 dish

I have the cash in bank to make the $300 switch to Direct for 3 tv's if it comes to that point, but really don't want to go that far just for local HD...

I'm curious as if I will recieve any new channel's with my current setup if your saying they will be on 61.5 or whatever...

Just talked to the "account specialist" and they comped the install of the wing dish. Thanks for the help.

To answer your questions Hokoo. The woman I spoke with said that the HD locals only include ABC and FOX (though I'm almost sure they locked in CBS, oh well) and offered me these options.

A) 24 month contract waive install fee
B) No contract $59 install fee

Again this is because our locals are at a different orbital (61.5) than the ones we already get.

After explaining nicely to her that it was Dish's choice to put them there and not mine, and that I had been a loyal customer for years and would hate to have to switch to Charter or Direct because I felt like Dish was taking advantage of the situation, she gladly waived the fee.

The installer should be here Tuesday, and God willing I'll be good to go.

Thanks again to the forum for the help.

When I upgraded last summer I wanted a 2nd 500 pointed at 61.5 'cause I was concerned about LOS to 129--I have heavy woods in my backyard--West. When the installer finally showed up I was informed that my FSN, Fox Sports Detroit HD, was ONLY available on 129 so I let him point the 2nd dish there. The 129 signal has been ok but I still prefer to have 129 on a separate dish--easier for me to peak when necessary. Now they finally light up the Flint locals and I have to either get a 1000 and re-aim a 500 or add a third dish??? I'd have to have a pole/dish mounted in my FRONT yard to see 61.5. Anybody know if Fox Sports Detroit HD is still only on 129 or is it mirrored now on 61.5? Went through hell getting my up grade done last year, not looking forward to another installation nightmare.

If you already have locals AND HD, they should install the wing dish for 61.5 FREE!!

I had HD and wanted to add locals, which required 148. Dish wanted $59, so I swung my 61.5 around to 148. If they put my HD locals on 61.5, I'll need 5 orbital locations to get everything, like Austin, because RSN is on 129..

I'm in the Flint market. I just got off the phone with Dish tech support because I couldn't get the new HD locals either. An installer is going to come to my house and upgrade my Dish. She said a charge of $59.99 will be on next month's bill, but as soon as work is completed the charge will be credited back. Now we'll see whether that happens, but I didn't even have to ask.

My only problem now is that out of all the local channels I receive (PBS, CBS, NBC, ABC, and FOX), only ABC and FOX are live in HD. Does anyone know whether the other networks will be rolled out later on, or if I need to go antenna shopping? I've been waiting for these HD locals for months and am disappointed to only be getting two.

Antenna will be a better picture than HD via satellite.

Quick update on a couple things as the install was done this morning and I am up and running.

- from the time you open the work order to get the wing dish installed until the time it is complete, you have no locals. They take them off of your account then add them back when it is installed.

- Though the phone rep told me that only ABC and FOX would be in HD, there is also a CBS HD channel that is available. Still waiting on NBC, CW, and PBS, but 3 is better than 2.

Thanks again for your help in this.

Yes thank's for those who have already called and gave us the right step's to also call...

I called yesterday and the 1st lady I talked to gave me the run-around as the above poster by saying; "She could wave the $59 fee only if I signed another 24 month contract"

I stated my disapointment that they were making me do this when I have been paying 16 months already for a service not given...When she wouldn't budge, I said you leave me with 2 option's; "You either setup my programming the way its supposed to be setup or transfer me to the next person so I can cancel my service and switch to Direct-tv"

The 2nd lady I talked to after being transfered to cancel had no problem waving the fee but also said I didn't need to signup for an additional 24 month contract...

The installer will be here Thusday afternoon...If it is the same installer I had before (nice guy) then I'm gonna see what he can do about upgrading my 622 to a 722 for free if he has one on his truck...I'm ok with the 622 but would love the newer 722...Crossing fingers
