Guitar Hero 1 was genius, Guitar Hero 2 was good, but Harmonix were trying too hard to find "guitar" tunes, rather than just putting fun tunes on, though that was rectified with the 360 version.

Guitar Hero 3 without Harmonix was a pile of crap, and Rock the 80s was just shovelware I can only assume Harmonix were contractually pushed into creating.

It's plainly clear in Rock Band that Harmonix are incredibly passionate about what they create, this was also clear in their early PS2 titles Frequency (one of the best games on the system) and Amplitude, which are essentially Guitar Hero for Dance and Trance music only played on a Pad.

I am no longer interested in Guitar Hero in the slightest, and it is clear to me that Rock Band is the "true" Guitar Hero 3 and actually the plan for the franchise all along. I can only guess that when Activision gobbled up Red Octane and with them the rights to Guitar Hero, they saw Harmonix vision, and decided it was too complex/niche for them to want to pursue over the easy option of pumping out more and more Guitar Hero games.

If this is the case, they really are starting to end up with Egg on their face, because while Rock Band is trailing in units sold, it has still broken 1 million units on the 360 inspite of it's high price, and Harmonix/EA are now raking it in with the far more reasonably priced additional content (6 million downloads to date and it's only out in the US) and Rock Band has far more long term stay power.

Let's also not forget Rock Band Wii has yet to come out. Guitar Hero 3 sold best on the Wii/PS2 and I am sure we can expect the same trend with Rock Band...

I like all of those bands but I hope they aren't doing Aerosmith covers.

As for which Guitar Hero is better/best, you need to take a look at the tracklisting, how many good tracks are there and how many of them are masters? Rock Band is better than all of them IMO.

Activision and developer Neversoft paired on Guitar Hero III last year, and they are now taking an interesting detour in the franchise by bringing out a Aerosmith-oriented version this coming June. The companies gave TeamXbox an early glimpse at the work-in-progress this week, and what we saw was more than encouraging.

While Activision’s first announcement revealing its plans for the game don’t indicate whether it’s an expansion pack type of product or if it’d be a standalone product, as it did with Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the ’80s for PlayStation 2—a product that disappointed many reviewers who felt it didn’t add enough freshness to warrant a full retail price. What we can tell you is, while Activision says it hasn’t determined whether Guitar Hero: Aerosmith will carry the somewhat standard full price of $60, it most definitely isn’t an expansion, and it certainly looks like it’ll offer more than enough to be its own product.

Guitar Hero: Aerosmith was designed to span the career of the seminal band’s career, more as a “Behind the Music”-like tribute and retrospective. Activision and Neversoft only enabled us to see the first two of the game’s six sets, but it’s clear that there’ll be much more for Guitar Hero fans to do than to pick up a guitar controller and shred through Aerosmith’s extensive song catalog.

For example, before the first song was demonstrated after entering the initial venue—an accolade to one of Aerosmith’s first gigs, a 1970 performance at Nipmuc Regional High School in Mendon, Massachusetts—the game ran off some video clips of the band members being interviewed about those early days, such as a story about how Steven Tyler raided the school’s locker room and took a shirt to wear because it had less holes in it than the one he was wearing. This is just a part of the custom content created specifically for the game.

According to Neversoft, another venue that was re-created into the game was New York’s Max’s Kansas City, though the developer’s art staff didn’t have the actual club available to them as they attempted to build the in-game facsimile. The artists took as much source material as they could find, many from YouTube videos, of how the club appeared back in the ’70s. Apparently, they did a decent job as some of those who saw the game and had also attended the club in its heyday attested to how the game nailed the venue’s look in that level.

Also, each part of the game reflects one of the band’s album covers, such as 1975’s “Toys in the Attic,” which is portrayed by numerous gigantic toys strewn around the stage where the band is playing. The band members have also been re-created in a caricature style that will be familiar to those who rocked out with Guitar Hero III, Neversoft’s first contribution to the series. Also, the game’s entire interface, while sticking with many of the Guitar Hero franchise’s familiar elements, was fully reworked and stylized to complement this specific title.

While all of these cool design elements, the digital re-creation of band memorabilia and mementos, and band interview videos are all well and good, surely gamers will be picking up the package with the primary intention of playing a bunch of Aerosmith’s fun rock songs. The product will offer more than 40 songs, though each set starts with two songs from other popular bands who also happened to be lead-in acts for Aerosmith at one point or another. Here, for instance, is the breakdown of the first two sets’ selections:

“I Hate Myself for Lovin’ You”—Joan Jett and the Blackhearts
“All Day and All of the Night”—The Kinks
“No Surprize”—Aerosmith (from Night in the Ruts)
“Movin’ Out”—Aerosmith (from the band’s self-titled debut album)
“Sweet Emotion”—Aerosmith (from Toys in the Attic)


Set 2


“Dream Police”—Cheap Trick
“All the Young Dudes”—Mott the Hoople
“Make It”—Aerosmith (from the band’s self-titled debut album)
“Uncle Salty”—Aerosmith (from Toys in the Attic)
“Draw the Line”—Aerosmith (from Draw the Line)


Some of the songs are from the original masters, but Neversoft said that some tracks were re-recorded by Aerosmith specifically for this game…especially when the band discovered—clearly to its members’ disdain, as the story was told to us—that some of the master tapes couldn’t be found. All recordings featured remixing of Joe Perry’s guitar parts to cater to the gameplay and to “bring them forward,” so they’re easier for players to key on.

Steven Tyler also redid some singing parts, which Neversoft said was an amazing thing to be a part of. The developers claimed that the only way he could replicate the tunes were to belt them out as full volume, which meant he could only work a few hours a day before his voice started getting husky or more hoarse and he’d have to break for the day.

Motion capture was also part of the band’s contribution to the game’s construction. Though the in-game versions of the band members is cartoony, Neversoft wanted to be sure to accurately capture their mannerisms and the like, so the characters’ movements would indeed resemble that of an actual Aerosmith performance.

Though they wouldn’t give up the specific details, Activision did confirm that the game offers one “boss battle” that will be reminiscent to one of the features that Neversoft added to Guitar Hero III’s gameplay—where players could take on Guns ’n’ Roses’ Slash and Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello. Despite the lack of confirmation, you can probably guess who you’ll be shredding head-to-head against.

Knowing that there has been much concern expressed in the past over how much more difficult Guitar Hero III was designed to be from its predecessors, Neversoft was asked about the Aerosmith game’s difficulty. While we didn’t get a specific answer or a chance to go hands-on with the title to see where its difficulty truly lies, Neversoft indicated that Guitar Hero: Aerosmith will have a smooth ramp up in its difficulty, and also admitted that “there’s no DragonForce in this one,” but it’ll still challenge players who want a game that’ll push their performance.

There are still more questions than answers—including the statement from Neversoft that there won’t be a co-op Career Mode, but without an elaboration on what the “co-op progression” that will be included should provide to players—but we’re also coming close to being within two months of the game’s release. Given how these things generally work, we’re expecting to get a fuller preview and some hands-on time in the near future, and when we do, TeamXbox will bring you the results.

It's Wes Anderson's latest flick (released/distributed by Fox with no Blu-ray release :mad:), anyways in that movie they use three Kinks songs, beautifully. It happens to be 3 of my favorite songs and two of yours. :)

I loved Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums but I haven't checked out the Life Aquatic or The Darjeeling Limited yet. At this point, I think I'll just wait for them to get released on BD. There's nothing quite like watching a good movie you've never seen before in high-def.
