DirecTV promising 150 HDTV channels

While Echostar waits anxiously for the troubled Americom AMC-14 satellite to limp slowly into its correct orbit, DirecTV is making hay – and promising 150 national HDTV channels.

DirecTV says its American viewers will have access to up to 150 HDTV channels, now that its DirecTV-11 satellite was successfully launched last week. The satellite is working well and will take a couple of weeks to reach its planned 99.2 deg West orbital position, and will come into full service in September.

DirecTV-11 is a clever satellite in that it uses Ka-band (from the German for “short” which is Kurz-above, and uses 26-40 GHz frequencies) spot-beam technology where a satellite beam can be focused on a specific region. As far as the United States is concerned this means that the identical Ka-band frequencies can be reused in a very efficient manner many times over, enabling DirecTV to beam a group of so-called “local” HD channels into a targeted market, and reuse the same satellite frequencies for another batch of “local” channels a few hundred miles away.

But DirecTV, along with DirecTV-10 already in orbit (and the Spaceway pair of craft), will also add to the overall portfolio of their HDTV offering, hence their latest promise to deliver up to 150 national channels, and when DirecTV-12 is launched next year taking their overall total to close on 200 national HDTV channels.

DirectTV now has 92 high-def channels, and is beaming local HD services into 77 major cities – a number that will grow once DirecTV-11 enters services.

Your heading is misleading. The statement clearly states "up to 150 HDTV channels". To many people misinterpret a statement like this as a promise and get all upset. They will have the capacity for 150 channels but if those channels don’t exist than there is no way DirecTV, or anyone else, can provide them.

This is still great news and I’m looking forward to more HD channels including my locals.

Yeah, sort of like when directv said they will have 100 hd channels by the end of 2007. Sounds very familiar to me.

Here we go again.

By definition, they are already delivering "up to" 150 HD channels. And so is everyone else for that matter.

Everything I've read concerning Directv 11, that came from Directv, stated that if the launch went smoothly it would be live in September. The only people I have seen mention May or June were members here "theorizing" when it would go live.

I am more concerned about when these channels will have HD content. Giving me Nick and Cartoon network in HD, does very little for me when they do not have any content.:2cents

I'm guessing Directv announced the Sep-08 dates to go along with the start of NFL Sunday Ticket. The last HD sat (Directv10) was ready in 80 days, and it had a couple of problems. Since this sat (Directv11) launched from the equator, is should be ready to go in less than 80 days, which means no later than Jun-08. I don't know why Directv would have a working satellite and not utlilize it.

more local HD's would be nice. There are three stations taht are not provided in HD by DirecTV, 26WCIU, which broadcasts Bulls, Sox, and Cubs games, Channel 50WPWR, and PBS. I can get them via my indoor ota antenna, but it is so much easier just to get them from the receiver.
