Say good-bye to VOOM!

Doom Looms for Cablevision's Voom
Friday April 8, 10:21 am ET

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Cablevision Systems Corp. (NYSE:CVC - News) on Friday said it has gone ahead with plan to close its Rainbow DBS unit, which operates the Von satellite television service.

Voom will not be available to customers from April 30, the company said. Cablevision said it will continue to look into the possibility of selling Voom's TV channels.

The move is a blow for Cablevision Chairman Charles Dolan, who last month got a reprieve from the board to keep Voom running, pledging his own money to support the money-losing service. That arrangement ended on March 31.

The fight to keep Von running has pitted Dolan against his son James, Cablevision's CEO, who has voted to shut the satellite service down to shield shareholders from further losses.

Maybe they'll sell to DTV?

I agree, it would be very cool. If D* would use a bit of the space on the soon to fly new satellite for those 21 HD channels instead of only going for HD locals, I think they would have a much happier customer base.

It would be great if D* bought the rights to some of these HD offerings. I haven't pulled the trigger on an upgrade to D*HD because I cannot justify $11 a month for 4 HD channels. I think most people are like me on that, and an offering of 12 or so HD channels for $12-$15/month would bring a lot more people into HD.

Side note, I know we want D*tv to add more HD nationals and not load up the new birds with HD locals, but I think having you locals HD will sway more people than TBS/ESPN2/HDNET HDs. (I only say that because the uninformed masses don't realize they can get 95% of their local channels OTA now. I acctually got into an argument with the sales guy at Best Buy on that. He tried to convince me I couldn't get ABC or CBS HD without cable even though my house is 0.6 miles from thier digital transmitter)

Problem is there is no room on the current D* birds and Voom is on an E* bird.

Some folks like myself live in valleys in the mountains
and OTA antennas for local stations are a joke!
