Hello everyone! High Contrast TVs? Black levels?

:hithere: Hello everyone. I have finally decided to stop lurking and register. As you can see from my sig I have a Sony Wega 34" HDTV that I love for the most part.

I am posting on this board because I am pretty sure my next TV will be an LCD or Plasma.

I have two questions.

What is the deal with high contrast TVs? I guess I don't understand how they differ from what is available now. When will they be available? How much will they cost? Will the come down in price quickly?

Also, my friends all have plasmas and LCDs and every time they come over and we use my little 34 incher they always tell me I have great black levels. I guess I don't really understand what that means. How can a TV I bought a couple years ago have better black levels than those of newer, much more expensive sets?

CRTs have better black levels than either plasma or LCD.
But it is likely that they have done a little reading and are just blowing smoke with such comments.

One of my friends has a Samsung LNT5265FX. Today he showed me his "blacks" and I did notice that when the screen went all black I could sometimes see a blueish, ghostlike remnant from the last picture.

However, I really enjoy his TV. It goes for $2000 all over the web so I figure that is a pretty decent deal. Unless there are sets that are better deals for $2000?

I found in picking my LCD TV, 42" Sharp Aquos, there are allot of factors to take into consideration. I have a very bright room and its offered the best picture for that type of room.

and of course what are you using it for, just HD movie watching or games?...:what:

I too have noticed that the newer Sharp Aquos line LCD's have darker blacks than most. The "blackness" of the screen is discernible even when the set is off...BUT the reflectivity of the screen is a bit more noticeable than most other LCD's.
There seems to be some tradeoff between blackness and reflection.

Remember, you cannot get darker blacks than the color of the screen when it is turned off.

I am looking HARD at the Aquos line, maybe 46", to replace my smaller (37") Magnavox LCD which will go into the bedroom...IF I can move out the half ton 30" Cathode Ray monster Toshiba without breaking my back.

Currently, the Sony XBR's are considered to have the best blacks of any LCD TV out there. FWIW, when I watch Flyers hockey in HD, the blacks of their uniform easily rivals my 36XBR CRT TV.

Pioneer is considered to have the best black level for any HDTV on the market.
