You don't have to use the STB if you use your TV's internal QAM tuner. However, without a cable card, you will not get any premium channels, HBO, Showtime, etc. You can split the signal and use both the STB and the internal QAM tuner. You will have to check your TV's manual to see what steps you will have to take to scan for the channels. Your manual should also tell you which coax input to connect the cable.

I already posted in you other thread concerning this issue. But since you added a couple more questions here, I will post again.

If you have digital cable, just simply connect the coax cable to the TV strait from the wall and do a digital scan for channels. You should pick up all your basic channels and your locals (and a few other) HD channels. What "HD" channels would depend on your location and cable provider. You will not be able to get your premium "scrambled" channels without a STB/Cable Card..

Depending on your package you may or may not need your STB. If you subscribe to any premium channels like HBO/Skinamax you will definately need your STB. Unless you also are using a Cable Card. I think you will also need it for On demand/PPV.

But you cansplit the signal and connect it and your STB to the TV at the same time. This is a great function if you have/use PIP..

If you dont use VOD and PPV, try to use cable card (if you tv support it) for cheaper solution.
For Comcast in Houston, first cable card is free....BUT you will need to try your luck to get it to work.
