Hey!!

Check out this site!!

http://www.agoraquest.com/index.php

It's all about Sony products, and here is a bit of what is on their site right now:

Groupbuy Latest News: (February 22, 2005)

Our Groupbuy retailer now ships televisions daily with white glove service. This means that the television will be in your hands sooner since it's shipped once they have confirmed your order.

Discounts are generally 10% off Retail price with no sales tax and free White Glove shipping. Great deals on every product including the KDF50WE655, KDF42WE655, KDF55WF655 and 34XBR960.

I clicked on their instant quote thing & the discount is 10%, which brings the price down below 2Gs!! :D

Problem is, what is 'Retail Price'... 10% off LIST is no big deal... internet price search shows prices as low as $1600...

If you read the feedback on those 'internet prices as low at $1600' places, you'll see that most of them are based in New York. And they require verbal confirmation of your order. And they try to tack on a lot of stuff. And people report strange stories like, "Oh, that's the UK model which won't have a full warranty. You'll need the US model which costs more..." that kind of thing.

The idea seems to be to lure you in with ridiculous prices, then tack on as much as they can. If they aren't able to, suddenly, the item is on backorder.

You're casting aspersions with a rather broad brush to say all the vendors in the biggest commercial market in the US are all crooks... Caveat Emptor applies to all markets...

Perhaps. I shopped around the places advertising new KD-34XBR960 for around $1600. All the ones I checked into had some fairly awful customer stories that weren't your typical customer whining. It was an odd coincidence, but they all were based in New York.

I have gotten the bait and switch deal from some online store from the NY area also but I can't believe that all are bad. 10% from $2199.00 with free white glove shipping isn't the greatest deal

All stores in the NY area are not bad.
You are right, of course.
I apparently just stumbled across a concentration there.

The cheapest may be questionable, but there is lots of room between $1600 & $2200...

I think your concentration may be illusory... Rather like a critcism of Rotterdam as a smuggling port, many tons of contraband siezed, but when the fact it handles the third largest volume of ANY port was considered it was actually a LOWER percentage than other ports... NYC has so much of EVERYTHING, it probably has more crooks AND more honest people concentrated... it's a metro area with more than 16 million people - larger than many countries!

I would like to throw my .02 in here. The cheapest price I've seen so far is $1848.55 on mysimon.com/ and the reseller seems to have 5 stars so I'd suggest going with that. I know I plan to when I get the bank. It'll be the first real TV set I buy then I'm getting a Dish HDTV receiver with that as well. Btw has anyone bought the official Sony stand and if so what do you think of it?

I have the 960XBR with the stand. Got it for $300 and looks great with this TV. Its also made to support this 200 pd beast. If you're gonna spend a couple grand on a television that you plan on keeping for a long time, break down and spend the money for the matching stand. It looks nice.

I got the "official Sony stand", and it has it's good & not-so-good points...

First off, the "sony stand" isn't really from Sony. It's manufactured by another company (whose name I forget at the moment) located in CA.

I ended up ordering a second glass shelf (for $40.00) to install on mine.

I assembled it myself & the stand is surprizingly sturdy. :)

I like the custom fit & the way that the TV clips to the stand in the back for safety purposes.

My last set was a 27" XBR & I had the "sony" stand for that one too. I will never forget the way it survived being literally @ ground zero for the 1994 Northridge CA earthquake!!

I was living within 5 miles of the epicenter of that earthquake in '94 & it literally threw me out of bed onto the floor under my coffee table. I was laying prone under the table and the shaking was bouncing me up and down off the floor & everything was crashing all around me!! My refridgerator tipped over, the chandaleer fell out of the ceiling, the toilet tank busted off & the whole shower unit broke away from the wall. All windows busted out & I couldn't shut my from door anymore~

BUT...

My Sony XBR simply rode out the shaking & sort of "walked" itself across the room, still securely strapped to it's stand! The only damage to it was from a book case that tipped over and scratched it! :yippee:

So I do like the way they mount securely to the stand. :yippee:

What I don't like about this particular stand is that the design is open, so your equipment is not enclosed & can get dusty quickly. :(

Also, even with a 2nd glass shelf, you don't have a lot of room for devices. Lastly, the stand has a feature that theoretically is supposed to allow you to hide your connecting cables in the back of the stand, but between the power cords & connecting cables, there wasn't enough room to stash the cables inside the stand.

I just have the back piece leaning against the wall behind the TV, with a mess of cables tucked behind. :o

Hope this was helpful! :D

Let's see....
100% less than Sony's TV stand price. Hmmmm. 100% less, you say? That would make it, what, free?
