More Channels with built in ATSC Tuner

I have comcast basic cable. No box. I have a Sony Grand Wega LCD rear projection with a built in digital tuner. I am getting all the regular analog channels and the local digital channels. The digital channels are HD when a broadcast is in HD. My question is....how can I get MORE without renting the box. I hate boxes and I bought this tuner so I could use it. The TV has a cablecard slot. I assume if I get a cablecard from comcast I will get more channels but will have to pay a fee for the card right? Can I get a cablecard off the internet that will get the channels? I can get analog boxes that get the channels, why not a cablecard? Also, if there is NO WAY to get more channels without either renting a box or a cablecard, do you think they will offer more than local digital channels after the big switch in 2009? Thanks for any advice.

I believe Comcast charges about $2.50 a month for the cable card. Don't be a cheap skate. Just get it. Probably no other way.

The CableCard contains proprietary encryption algorithms. If you don't get the CableCard from the cable company, it won't actually work.

OK, so getting a cablecard off the net is a no go. How about more channels after the big switch to digital? Do you think the cable companies will still only give you the locals because that is what is mandated or do you think they might throw a few more HD channels in there?

The digital transition doesn’t mean anything to anyone here in this forum; once it goes into affect, you will no longer get analog (SD) OTA. If you have Cable, SAT etc nothing changes.

The price for the basic package is artificially depressed by the regulatory authority, so often it represents a LOSS to the service provider. It is getting to the point where service providers are better off without such customers than with them so they'll surely do nothing to provide such customers any incentive to stay with the basic service.

Wow, feel like I just got flamed by a "company man"....Thanks for the replies by those who respect me as a guy just trying to get the most for my fixed income buck....as for the rest of you "rich" guys willing to throw cash in the fire and call everyone else cheap skates....KMA! It might be different in other places but here I have no choice of "which" cable company I can use. Comcast has a monopoly in my neighborhood and I don't think they are losing any money here.....so pardon me for spending ONLY 30 bucks EVERY month for a $5 wire they installed about 20 years ago. I know there is more to it than just a wire but give me a break about the poor cable company and us cheapskates...

Wow, feel like I just got flamed by a "company man"....Yet, you didn't. I'm a customer, just like you, nothing more.

You have choices, should you choose not to deprive yourself of those options. However, there is no cheap ride, unless you're willing to reduce the level of service you're getting.
