Startech Scaler Opinion

02-12-2008, 03:58 PM
In an effort to do everything to improve the SD performance on my 50" Plasma TV (Samsung 5084T 1080P), I wanted to know if anyone has any experience with a Startech Component Scaler (model VID2VGATV). I use component cables since they seemed to give me a better picture and I have an Electroline signal booster and a Monster noise filter/surge protector that my Comcast HD box is plugged into, so the only other thing I can think of doing is adding a scaler. The one I saw is less than $200 so I don't know if it'll do anything to help or not. I get the usual artifacting on SD channels so I'm trying everything. Thanks for the info.

The artifacting you are seeing is a Comcast issue and no scaler will help until you get as clean a signal as you can. If you have a reasonably new digital TV, the scaler in that is probably as good as the scaler in that $200 stand alone unit.

Have you calibrated your set?

Calibrated how? Do you mean sharpness, brightness, etc.? I know some people have mentioned adjusting the output to something other than 1080P to lessen the compression. I've read a lot of threads and may be confusing things a little. Let me know and I'll give it a shot. Thanks.

Yes, have you at least carefully adjusted brightness, contrast, color and hue with a good calibration disc?
Also, have you turned sharpness down or "off" and turned "off" all of the "auto crap" controls such as DNI, DNR, Flesh, etc.?

Until you have done these things, your efforts to improve pq by spending $$$$ hundreds on new equipment will be somewhat futile.

I'll give it a try. Where do I get a calibration disc? I didn't get anything with the tv. Thanks for the info.

The two most popular are Avia II and DVE.

You can get both from Amazon.

I personally recommend Avia II

Perfect. Thanks!
