I'm looking on advice for the best way to hook up all my STUFF. I have a HDTV will all the inputs and outputs I could need.
I have :
-a HD cable box(satilite with HDMI output.)
-a HD upconverting DVD player with HDMI out
-X-box 360 with component output and optical for audio
-Sony 5.1 surround with 3 HDMI inputs and 1 HDMI out put a couple of coaxel inputs.....

So here is my question. Do I hook everything to my tv and send it all to the reciever or vise-versa. Whats the best or most commen meathod?

Probably the best method will be to hook the sources directly to the HDTV and connect the sources directly to the surround system. You may need a switch box if your surround does not have enough inputs.

The reason I say that is many HDTVs will not echo all of the inputs to the audio outputs and will only output the internal ATSC tuner. Other HDTVs will convert the input signals to 2.0 so that only Pro Logic surround will be available.

The only way to know will be to hook it up and try the TV to surround connection. If it is satisfactory, you are set. Otherwise, you will need to add whatever is necessary to connect the sources direct to the surround system.

OK, comming from the TV to surround, wouldn't 1 cable be able to send all the info? For instance to use my x-box I would set my tv's input to the right input and the output is sent to the reciever. Then I switch the input on my tv for my dvd player and that same output would go to the receiver aswell.
Would that work?

It would assuming that the sound output from the tv is 5.1 digital. Does the tv have that? What's the owner's manual say?

Would that work?Sometimes yes, sometimes no. It depends on the operation of your particular TV. I'd recommend trying it.
