:( Just got the HD pac and I am disapointed that D* seems to not send dolby on all the HD channels, example
Showtime HD standard audio and at the same time the non HD showtime channel had DD audio? any thoughts?

It's never really bothered me since my A/V receiver will sample any HD/non-DD audio feed up to Prologic and it sounds find for watching movies.

Yeah i was disappointed as well when i got my hd receiver and not dolby digital with all channels. I think we are a ways away from, very unfortunatly, having full digital broadcasting.

I thought the true definition of High Definition was 5.1 Surround Sound or higher? I thought I read that somewhere. The article essentially said that the definition of High Definition including the improved picture quality also included 5.1 sound or higher. So if something is broadcast without 5.1 sound or higher it cannot be marketed as High Definition. If it is, it is considered false advertising.

The digital sound that is part of the ATSC spec is called AC3, aka DD 5.1 OR DD 2.0. Although it's always digital, sometimes it's only two channels.

Analog TV (NTSC) can't carry any digital sound (it's analog) only ProLogic at best, psuedosurround, which is encoded on top of analog stereo.

The program has to be encoded in Dolby Digital before DirecTV can pass it on to you. It may not be DirecTV's fault.

It must be digital to be SENT with ATSC... it's impossible to include an analog part.

Digital audio does not mean it is always Dolby Digital 5.1 though. You could have digital audio and yet be mono. DirecTV is going to pass along whatever they received.

Check the setup of your STB unkl... you may need to change your audio setting from PCM to DD.

I also wasn't picking up dd til I stumbled on the solution. Make sure you're on an hd channel. Go in setup in the menu then audio and pick dd. The first few times I setup I was not on an hd channel so it wouldn't do anything in dd, the only sound I got was in PCM. Much better audio now on all channels.
Hope this helps.
