The TV in question at Mom's house is 4:3
She would rather watch all shows with out bars,
even the HD channels she would rather have stretched.

I have the TV set to 4:3 and the SA8300HD Passport set to
1080p and 480i with 4:3 screen, stretch 16:9 pictures

SD channels always apper to be fine but when she turns the
TV off the set and then turns it back on the next day the TV
will go back to 16:9 aspect ratio and HD channels get bars.

Can't figure out if there is a way to permantely set 4:3

Thanks for the help

Since many image shapes with different aspect ratios are in use, you'll always have 'bars' unless you distort the picture. A good thing to consider when buying a TV.

Widescreen is the new standard, and a pillarboxed low def 4:3 image is preferrable to a letterboxed high def 16:9 one. The image with less detail should occupy a smaller area.
