Advice on connection needed. Using PS3, Direct TV, and Onkyo SR605

01-07-2008, 08:26 PM
First off, this is what I am working with:

1) 58in Panasonic Plasma with 2 HDMI inputs
2) Onkyo SR605 Receiver w/2 HDMI inputs and 1 HDMI output
3) Playstation 3 w/ HDMI
4) Direct TV HD Box w/ HDMI

I am trying to find the best way to connect these components.
My thinking was I would connect the two sources (3) and (4) to the receiver (2) and the receiver to the Plasma (1).

However, does this mean that I have to always turn on the receiver when I just want to watch Direct TV? This would be a pain.

For the PS3, it is fine with turning on the receiver since I will want to use the speakers connected to the receiver when watching DVD or playing games.

So my other thought was, connect the Direct TV directly to the Plasma using HDMI and then use an optical cable to the receiver for when I want to use the audio during Direct TV. Would this work?

Please give me some advice before I buy all the cables tomorrow

Thanks so much!!

Hi roro,

This post is very old but I am looking at buying the Onkyo SR-5300 Home theater system and I have a directtv HD DVR + PS3 slim too.

I was wondering how you did your connection? I am interested in knowing if your 2nd suggestion worked - HDMI cable from DVR directly to the TV and then component cable from DVR to the Onkyo receiver?

His last post was in Jan. '08 so I don't think he will answer you. ;)

His 2nd suggestion was about sound (optical) cable not video (component).

I think the best option with a receiver is always to connect your components (equipment not cables) to your receiver and then your receiver to your TV. Personally, I wish that I could do this but my rec does not have HDMI.
