I am looking to buy a large screen flat panel hdtv for our family room, which is fairly large. The tv will be mounted on the wall over the fireplace mantel. The room should not be too bright, but there are french doors leading to a covered porch on one side of the family room and windows in a breakfast room at the far back of the family room. Here are the models I am considering at the moment:

1. Samsung 57" 1080p 81 Series LCD

2. Sony Bravia 52" 1080p XBR4 LCD

3. Pioneer Kuro 60" 1080p Plasma

Your thoughts??? Thanks!

Pioneer, without a doubt. But a 60" is a hefty thing to mount, so be sure it's secure.

I would vote for the Pioneer also.
Above the mantel? Make sure the angle of viewing is not too steep. The 'highest' best height I can imagine would be looking dead on at the the center of the screen while standing. Even at that height being seated you will be looking up a good bit, which most say wears thin after a spell if it is too high.
An install like this can really look good - having a lot of wow factor, but it may hamper the optimal viewing experience ....if mounted too high.

That one could save you some money over the Pioneer and is also a very nice plasma.
Here is a nice artice that explains the highs & lows of LCD & Plasma...
