Sony KV36XBR and new Satellite HD questions...

Hiya,
I've had a Sony KV36XBR for a couple years now, and just got around to getting the Bell Express View HD package. In the settings for the sattelite receiver I can switch it from 720p to 1080i, and don't really notice a lot of difference, although I'm still using the component cables while I wait for my DVI cable to get here from Ebay.
My question is... in either of these resolutions, the picture is not full size on the screen. It's either in 16:9 (which I assume is the HD channels), or 4:3 and smaller than the full screen size. Is there something I need to do to the TV to make the 4:3 fullsize? What am I missing?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Regards,

T.

Unless the program you're watching is in HD (16:9), you'll need to stretch the 4:3 SD image, nothing you can really do other than that.

Your tiny image is a 4:3 show sent over HDTV, in a 16:9 frame. All HDTV is 16:9, even when sending an old narrowscreen image - they add padding. Your problem is shared by the others who have TVs that are not the correct shape for the new standard.

There is a workaround... run an SVideo cable from your STB to a new input on your HDTV, and switch to the downconverted SDTV version. You'll be able to zoom this version to full screen using the TV's zoom controls.

I am also a Sony owner and have faced the same problem. The real answer is to determine if your HD receiver has the capablilty of passing the HD signal to the Sony in its native format. Your XBR is capable of processing all catagories (420i/p, 780p,1080i). Closely read you receivers manual regarding the native format. DirecTV's new HD model H10 is the first HD receiver to truly address Sony's unique way of processing HD signals. The DVI cable should prove a good move. I will be glad to prove further help if needed. What is the brand and model number of your HD receiver?

While the XBR can accept all formats, it displays in 1080i like all CRTs. Setup your HD output for widescreen 1080i, and your SD output as 4:3 480i so your TV will present it in 'full' mode.

Better yet, if the ird has a native setting, put it on that and the tv will disply at 720p,1080i, 480p or480i depending on the feed.
