What is causing this problem

I had a Toshiba 42HL196 which had several problems and Toshiba ending up shipping me a new unit this time I got a 42HL167 I can't say I am thrilled because this "new" set doesn't have the features my other one did but the picture seems to be ok.

One thing I have noticed is when I'm watching A SD signal in 4:3 there is some noise I can see along the top of the display. I also noticed that when watching something and they go to a remote it gets really bad. Many times I see white lines that are moving back and forth just at the top, most the time on commericals I will attach a pic that shows what I mean, the image is blurry but you can see the white on top I am talking about.

I thought it might be a format issues or picture size, I always have it in "native" and the auto ratio is on.

does anyone know if this is something that can be adjusted or do I have another lemon??

thanks

I've seen that on some sets only with certain channels or signals. I did think it was an aspect and scaling issue, however, I've been wrong before. I had a 32" Westinghouse LCD that did that on Fox HD programming.

I`ve had my set now for just about a month. I absoutley love it. I just set it on Wide Screen 1-"and leave it there". No vertical bars, no horizontal bars-except on commercials. Also found that with the dynallite back lite turned off, I get a better picture. No noise, no muss, no fuss. It even seems to upconvert SD dvd`s quite nicely. This is the best TV I have ever owned. I also bought the 26inch HL57 and find it to be just awesome for SD just plugged into the cable outlet. I`m using component cables on my 42 inch Regza and am very pleased with the pic quality. Don`t know why you would want to watch anything in 4-3 on a 42 inch set? Any questions, and I will recheck my settings and get back to you. Good Luck.

Thanks for your reply, I will play with the settings and see how I like them. If you love your picture on component cables I suggest you try HDMI it's much better, I have both hooked up and the HDMI blows the component cables away.

When you have a 4:3 signal and watch it in widescreen you lose some detail, I have a keen eye for detail and I notice the loss.

I have to agree this is a new LCD even though it has less features than the one they replaced.

Thanks again for your reply

That is the data band along the top of the screen. Is there a setting to adjust the vertical shift up a tad to eliminate it? Usually with TVs there is something called overscan which was purposely done to keep this type of thing from happening, but with these new LCDs they have very little to no overscan.

Look for that setting somewhere in the user menu for the display.

Good luck!
