i have a magnavox 52 inch rear projection hdtv and i usually play my xbox 360 on it. I've noticed that i can use 480i, 480p, and 1080i but nothing else. When i use 720p it's just static and when i use 1080p there's two images side by side on the screen. Help please? As for the info on the tv, i know nothing else about it =/

My CRT rear projection set is the same. I just leave it set to 1080i and it works great. Any other resolution sent to the TV, 480 or 720 is de-interlaced/up-converted to the TV's native resolution (1080).

No need to. Your TV native resolution is 1080i, so like Loves stated, it will just be upconverted/downconverted anyway. Just set everything you can set to 1080i.
