My understanding is that the RJ45 ethernet connector is not used at this time and all updates are from the satellites. Has this changed?

I have assumed that any updates would be automatic and the only time updates on demand would be needed was during initial installation or reactivation.

I checked the instruction book that came with my unit (HR20-100) but couldn't find anything about this.

I was told that you can use a wireless modem along with an internet "gaming adaptor" that goes for $75 at Best Buy.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=5943517&type=product&id=1061127609830

The unit is attached to the directv hr20 ethernet connection.

The internet port is active on the hr20. you just need the latest software. I downloaded beta software last evening for my hr20-100 and activated on demand.

Just need an internet connection to get started. Going to Bestbuy latter this week to try the gaming adaptor unless there is a better alternative.

The download was postponed friday evening so they may offer the download tonight between 11pm and 2:30 am. reset 02468.

Will this software download automatically or do you have to force it down? How do you force the update? :busy:

Nevermind, found the answer on another thread.
Thanks DodgerKing

"Are you asking how to force an update using 02468?

If so you press the red button and when the welcome screen comes on, key in 0 2 4 6 8 on your remote."

I'm still not connected to the internet via my PC's network.
IP Address=OK
Subnet Mask=OK
Default Gateway=OK
DNS=OK
Network=Connected
Internet=Not Connected
Now, I forced a download last night thinking I'm getting the software that I need but it still doesn't work. I know my PC network is correctly configured because the ethernet wire I used to hook up to my HR-20 is the same one I use for my XBox 360 and it works perfectly.:confused:

The gaming adapter for my xbox did not work. This is connected to the usb port. Be sure the adapter you get is for the RJ45 port. :busy:

I did the forced download twice and I still don't get the DOD menu or channel 1000. I believe D** is staggering the software and unless your receiver ID is authorized you won't get the correct software update. Only Mountain time zone is authorized at this point. Just be patient. In the meantime you need to figure out why your receiver is not connecting to the internet and to D**.

I was having the same issue you were. I had moved my DSL router by the D** box to connect it by RJ45 cable. I finally figured out my phone wall jack was loose.

What did you change about your internet set up to connect your D** box? Is your only change to take the ethernet cable from the xbox and connect it to D** box? If yes, then your d** box should be connecting unless you made other changes to your system. Have you eliminated all possibilites yet? Is your computer still accessing the internet? Did you go to the d** setup menu/Networking to connect to internet? :busy:

Nothing has changed in the setup. I unhooked the ethernet cable from the HR20 and back to the XBox360 and I had XBox LIVE no problem. I used the network setup menu on the HR20 using both wire and wireless method. The trouble is in the HR20 I'm guessing.:what:

Elementary, my dear Watson! Now if you can find someone logical at D** to send you a new receiver without hassling you. I suggest you skip customer service and ask to be transferred to the technical department. I find them more logical in their approach to solving problems. I had to call three times (and three return escalation calls from retention) before they transferred me to that dept. and immediately they sent me another box. My issue was a bad OTA tuner and I had logically eliminated everything else but Customer Service was insisting I buy a new antenna and/or pay an antenna installer to confirm the antenna was not faulty. Even though it was in my attic and well secured. It was an misguided and insane attemp to save D** a few bucks at my expense .....oh oh here I go again. :spam:

Good Luck!! :busy:

After doing some troubleshooting on my own, I found that after making numerous attempts at setting up connection, the settings became corrupted. As a last resort before calling D*, I restored to default settings (Network) and now my HR20 is connected to the internet. Also, I just rec'd an update which I hope is the DOD one.:banana:
