I have Verizon DSL, which means every phone plug in the house has Internet. Can I connect my HD-DVR to the internet with an ethernet cable? If so, what advantage is it to be connected to the internet?

When DirecTV On Demand goes nationwide the you can download complete movies for I believe $3.99 and most 1 hour programs for free. Just SD at first but HD as soon as possible.

If this is useful to you then it will be great. Other than that nothing yet.

If I'm not mistaken your DSL signal has to go through the modem before anything else.

that is correct. Even though your DSL is on all the phone jacks, you cant just plug computers into the jacks and you have DSL. it goes to the modem/router from the phone jack.

DSL is transmitted on the second pair of copper wires that make up your phone line (voice is transmitted on the first). That's why you need a modem to interpret the signal and filters on the other lines (so the DSL signal doesn't attenuate). You will only be able to hook up your DVR through your local network - not directly through the internet, unless it's connected directly to your DSL modem.
