Newbie needs info to connect to HD

I have a Hitachi 51s500 HDtv and I connected to DirecTV HD yesterday. I am pleased with the picture! My question is twofold 1) I am usiong the PrPbYLR connection , but my DirecTV box has HDMI. If I get a converter, will the HDMI picture be better that the component conection? 2) My second question is that I have my dvd recorder connecteded to the other HD component connection, and I do not have another HD connection for my XBox. Is there a switch that will give me another HD connection as well as Dolby Digital? Your help will be most appreciated.

Your answer to question 1 is NO. HDMI to component converters are quite expensive for 1 (around $150 +) and will not yield better PQ. It will still be converted from digtial back to analog at the TV end anyway. And HDMI and component video quality is very simular in terms of PQ.

They do sell component video switches with optical/analog audio as well. Here is 4x component switch with both optical and analog audio and remote control for $79:

Here is a 4x with remote, but video only for $35,

Thanks for the reply Bigloww. I'll be using the fibre optic line to my Dolby reciever, so I don't think that I really need the audio hook ups. I read a review on the Monoprice site and most of the users do not recomment resolutions above 720dpi. Are there any other suggestions? If not, thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I appreciate it much!

If your receiver has HDMI or component inputs/outputs why not use those and save yourself buying a switch.

Thanks for asking. I need an additional HDTV componant input for my XBox. If I use the rca inputs, the XBox looks all faded out and I have no dolby surround sound.

How about a HDMI/DVI cable for one of the components?

Next time you need a cable, try here:

I know there are several other excellent online suppliers for cables as well, so perhaps someone else will jump in with more links.
