HR20 Lease or Not Lease?

Before I upgraded from H10 Tivo to HR20 I purchased my HD Tivo from Best Buy for $399 a couple of years ago. After my purchase, I was informed by DirectTV on a call in that my unit was a Lease! I was a bit taken back at that time but my ruffeled feathers were smoothed when they informed me of the free replacement if my unit ever went bad for any reason. Now after I was shipped my HR20 from DTV free (19.95 shipping), I was informed that it was not a lease and they had never had leased units and I needed to agree to the $ 5.99 monthly protection plan which covered all receivers in my house regardless of type. My question is, are HR20s leases or not?

They are leases.

I got my HR10 from directly from DTV in November of 2005 and it was a purchase. Of course it was over $600 too. Right after that is when they started the lease only program. I kept it when I recently got an HR20.
