"Most of the problems of getting these systems running on these multicore processors are not solved. They are doctoral theses, not known implementation problems. So it's not even clear that over the lifespan of these next generation systems that they will be solved problems. The amount of time it takes to get a good multicore engine running, the Xbox 360 might not even be on the market any longer. That should scare the crap out of everybody."

And yet, Orange Box is out and running PERFECTLY on the Xbox 360, while the PS3 version is still in the works by some low rent, crapola EA team, scheduled for release sometime next year. Oh, and Gabe doesn't expect the PS3 version to meet the high quality standards set by the PC and 360 counterparts.

Second of all, this is ANCIENT news, and this is a HUGE Trademark Trolling Thread by GlowTM

And yet, Orange Box is out and running PERFECTLY on the Xbox 360

From IGN's review of 360 Orange Box:

As with the PC version, there are mid-level loads that halt the action. Unlike on PC, these loads are not a few seconds, but often 30 seconds to a full minute. This is especially aggravating when a load comes during a high-speed chase. Lastly, the visuals are not as good as they should be on 360. This is clearly a port of the original Xbox version. The resolution has been kicked up, the textures are better, and the framerate is solid save a few random moments. But it could look much better (as Episodes One and Two prove). Even compared to the PC version from three years ago, the visuals for HL2 on 360 aren't stellar.

I own this game. The loads are 8-11 seconds. On my AMD 4800+ X2 processor and Nvidia 7800GTX video card, and 2 gigs of RAM, load times are easily double that.

That bit about the graphics is just wrong. Just last night I had my PC hooked up to one input on my TV, and my 360 hooked up to the other. There is virtually no visible difference in graphics, at least for the HL2 portion of the game.

Glow, you do realize this article is very old right? You also do realize that Gabe Newell has praised the X360, and constantly ripped apart the PS3 right? Nice try, but you really do need to find something a little more up to date. Besides, look at all of the good reviews HL2 is getting. Too bad this game isn't available on the PS3 :)

BLOW, enjoy the PS3 version of Orange Box, which is being developed by EA :haha:

Edge: Going back to thinking about different platforms, we notice that you arent developing the PS3 version of The Orange Box in-house. Do you have some horror stories to share?

GN: I think the people who have The Orange Box on the PS3 are going to be happy with their game experience. Weve done the PC and 360 versions here and EA has a team doing the PS3 version and theyll make the PS3 version a good product; EA got the job done in putting a lot of people with PS3 experience on the project. But I think its harder to get it to the same standard as the 360 and PC versions.

Considering you're running on a middle of the pack rig with a card that's lesser than the 360s GPU, that's pretty good. Imagine what an 8800 series card and a little more CPU could do.

That's one of the many reasons why I ultimately left PC gaming. The selection of good games were becoming more limited, but I also couldn't keep up with the necessary hardware upgrades needed to play the latest games in full detail. What especially pissed me off about PC games, is that they always optimize their games to conform to the lowest possible denominator in terms of system specs to gain the widest possible consumer base as possible. This always screws the people who have the higher end rigs.

The strange thing is that I am on the last level of HL2, and I have not had a SINGLE load time take more than 12 seconds. And IGN said they had load times 30 seconds to a minute???

In fact, most of my load times are between 7-9 seconds. The longest one I had was about 12 seconds.

And also, that bit about how the visuals "aren't stellar" compared to PC: they are referring to the HL2 portion of the game, not the rest of the game.

360kid
10-14-2007, 08:54 PM
I can concur about the load times, I have been playing HL2 and I have yet to see a load time take any longer than 8 seconds.

I have also beat Portal, and load times between challenges are only 10 seconds at the most.

I barely notice load times, only thing I think is, "thank god, it is loading therefore I reached a save point."

Anyone who is on edge about getting the orange box, just get it. I am a hard to please gamer and I am very cost concerned. With that said, I can easily say the Orange Box is the best deal in gaming I have come across. I love Halo 3, but as soon as I began HL2, I was instantly hooked. I am a first time HL2 player and this is has me as happy as Hlao 3 does.... and it is two years old.

I had seen HL2 many times and I am very familiar with valve and steam. My brother is a loyal steam user, he buys and downloads from steam often. I also watched him play HL2 and Episode one when they originally came out. Me just being a console player, this is the first time I have played HL2. I skipped it on the original xbox.

I do not get to play as much as I would like but I am a gaming fan and keep up on the games for almost every platform including PC.

If you don't have anything good to say about something you like, might as well say something bad about something you don't, right?

There's some very useful info for both sides that can often be considered bad, but is info that should be spread. Case in point, no BC compatibility on the 40GB PS3. Important for someone purchasing it to know.

I see nothing here that would be useful for anyone to know, except maybe the quote about the load times.

4. I'm not a huge gamer. The last system I owned before an Xbox was a Genesis. I've never seen the need to own more than 1 console per gen. The PS3 is great because I can use it as a console and/or a BD player.
5. Initial impressions of the 360 were bad. No good games, overheating, etc. The problems still continue to this day. I don't buy bad electronics.

Very reasonable points, most of which I completely agree with. I'm not much of a Microsoft fan either, but I was a big fan of the Xbox because the other console giants were getting lazy. (I really only preferred Xbox because of Halo and Halo 2) The Gamecube was pretty much garbage, and Sony didn't make the PS3 with consumers in mind. Microsoft is forcing these companies to become competitive again. Look at Nintendo. They went from dead last to first. Sony is paying for their mistakes, but you can bet that they'll start making some changes and being more competitive. Because nobody wants to see Microsoft monopolize another industry. Market success from a consumer's standpoint depends on good competition.

how do you like your bmw? i just picked up a benz and almost picked up a 2007 5series the xi version (i forget the new model numbers). some guy had it for sale and sold it just before i got to his house. i freaking missed the deal of the year on a 5 series by about 30 minutes. i love the body style but didnt like the inside that much so i didnt even bother to test drive it. i wish benz offered a maintaince package like bmw though. one thing im loving is a benz only needs 1 oil change a year or 12,000 miles. i'm also like how they detail your car every time it's in the shop. heated seats, dual climate control, auto wipers, sweet stereo, free sirius, and a 160MPH speedometer (which i have gotten it up to 120mph before hitting traffic, oh yeah i also found out the breaks are top notch that day).

how do you like your bmw? i just picked up a benz and almost picked up a 2007 5series the xi version (i forget the new model numbers). some guy had it for sale and sold it just before i got to his house. i freaking missed the deal of the year on a 5 series by about 30 minutes. i love the body style but didnt like the inside that much so i didnt even bother to test drive it. i wish benz offered a maintaince package like bmw though. one thing im loving is a benz only needs 1 oil change a year or 12,000 miles. i'm also like how they detail your car every time it's in the shop. heated seats, dual climate control, auto wipers, sweet stereo, free sirius, and a 160MPH speedometer (which i have gotten it up to 120mph before hitting traffic, oh yeah i also found out the breaks are top notch that day).

its a 2000 5 series, so its hardly in the same class as an 07 5 series, but I do love most everything about it. Except repair costs. The brakes are insane. I've had 4 piston racing brakes on cars before, and this thing still seems to brake stronger. I'm considering getting something newer, but I'm also planning to buy a house next fall while the housing market is still crippled, so I'll probably postpone the new car purchase so as to save money for a down payment on a house.

Lets be truthful, your soured to gaming because your paid all this money for a nex gen console hoping for the best but it's failed your expectations miserably and you hate to admit it. Humans like animals lash out at things they fear or envy. At night you dream about that one big hit game for the PS3, but sadly it never comes... always just outside your grasp, always just a month away.

It's OK Steve we 360 owners forgive you for acting this way.

ROFLMAO !!!!!!
So True !!! Thats why I dispise Sony so much. They make promises galore and deliver on few of them. Not to mention their 'propriatary' everything. I hate their business ethics and I have watched their quality control fall through the floor, with TVs, music devices and VCRs, so I stopped supporting them after that. My Xbox got the RROD but it was promptly replaced and running like a champ once again. MS's online community is top notch and I dont mind paying $5/month for that kinda service, and gameplay. If Sony can get their sh*t together in the future, I may be swayed to give them another chance, but for now I'll stick with the console that delivers the goods I desire.

I've never had a problem with any Sony product. They are well-known for their reliability and high-quality displays. I'm curious- what Sony product do you think has/had bad QC?

That is an artistic rendition of BB dusting off his PS3 when he actually decides to turn it on on a bi-monthly basis.

that was pretty funny.

did you guys notice i'm bowing down to all my sony products not just the ps3? sony makes great products and im giving credit where credit is due. im bowing to a product that has the potential to be great. but i also have a rule that potential is nothing more then a gamble until it pans out. i'm also hoping the ps3 becomes eveything it's supposed to become, because that would be great for gaming. but in the mean time im not waiting around playing RFOM or Ninja Gaiden 110x and missing out on games like g.o.w. or Halo 3 just to be a loyal sony supporter.

getting a house is a much better decision. you can write off interest on a house but you can't write of paying rent so go with a house. your tax return should be much bigger and you can use that as a down payment on a new bmw.

omg that is a horriable statment and i know you know better. i have posted about insane issue that sony has had more then once and you where part of those threads. you cant act like you dont know those issues just like steve cant deny never saying he backs sony no matter what.

sony xbr1, A2000 both have lawsuites against them for having a defect rate higher then our government allows. sony has lost every motion and the suite is most likely going to be settled. it took a judge telling the sony lawyers that the law firm has more then enough evidence for the courts to accept this case for sony to extend the warranties on the optical blocks on those models. sony refused to admit the optical block was faulty until a judge stated otherwise.

the list is so freaking huge with sony products having issues, batteries, laptops, media formats, ps2, psx, cameras, video cameras, dvd players, and many many more products. there is a saying most electronics stores go by and that is "Sony is not the company it used to be". i cant tell you how many retailers have given me that exact same line. do you ever notice that high end stores dont carry Sony products anymore?

sorry man but sony is very low on the product reliability chain. even sony admitted it when they stated they needed to gain back their consumers and put the time and quality back in their other products that they have been putting into the ps3.

Launch day and still running strong.

I once left on a vacation to Mexico for 8 days, and I left my 360 ON the entire time. Not just on, but PAUSED in a game of Ghost Recon. I got back to the States, unpaused, and finished the level.

Have you heard of the people that leave their PS3's on 24/7 since launch? It's usually all those people that use the FOLDING program.
....since launch. Not since last week.

Anyone leaving a console or any piece of electronics on for that period of time has it coming to them. I don't just mean their electricity bill either. However, maybe to stimulate the current PS3 debacle perhaps they can start advertising that they run the longest. :D

Yeah? Tell that to the federal government! Computers are left on 24/7 in my federal government shop...just goes to show Dell makes a better computer than M$. As a matter of fact, while M$ can make software, their hardware is junk...pretty sad an employee of M$ blames consumers for his own company's lack of abilities! ;)

LOL. Riiiiiight. Steve and TypeA are both in need of some better replies. I didn't mention anything about faith in my companies abilities. I simply stated that people shouldn't leave consumer electronics on for extended lengths of time. Has nothing to do with Microsoft. It doesn't matter if it's Dell, Pioneer, Microsoft, Sony or any other brand.

I've been here almost eight years and if I didn't have faith that the company was going in the right direction I wouldn't be here. Not every company will be so quick to bite the billion dollar bullet to improve their program while they fix the shit. I'll be the first to admit I drink the company kool-aid when it comes to alot of our products that I use them on a fairly regular basis. That doesn't mean I don't get irritated at some of our practices and most recent design flaws in the 360. I was a RROD victim and I also went through the exact same support process as everyone else.

With that said, one of the reasons love the company is because of innovation and the desire continue to improve our products and customer relationships when there is a problem which is alot more than I can say for "other" big names out there. :D

:haha: ok people do yourself a favor put your xbox in a very well ventalted area in the horizontal position and not on the carpet and not jammed inside your entertainment center or wrapped around fiberglass. Your xbox is like a plant it has to breath or it will just get hot and choke to death. don't spill your coke on it, slam it around, pull on the drive doors or curse at it. Be kind to it and it will stay cool and happy and give you years of enjoyment

In its defense, I have transported my console extensively, and it still chugs along like the day I bought it. Ive had my share of issues with, not only the console in both hardware and software related issues, but with poorly built accessories and unstable games. Thus far I have avoided sending the console in for repair, and Im grateful for that. I cant imagine going weeks without my console, I use it way too often for media and games to live without it. As long as I avoid the rrod, I figure I can deal with the piss-poor build quality of the most expensive console Ive ever owned.:haha:

oh come on man i was not saying it like that. i just wanted to be clear that sony has had a reputation for not producing quality products like they used too. i hate this because i love sony tv's but have recently had to realize sony is not the tv maker it once was (or even basic electronics maker it once was). they have admitted there electronics has taken a slide because so much effort has gone into their brd, cell, and ps3. i know i made a huge list about this same topic not long ago.

i could also do a list for MS but i just dont have that type of time to research all of the failures ms has had. but if you really want to know what companies suck with reliability then look at JVC. they are the wolf hiding among the flock. their recalls are for things like tv's blowing up and catching fire followed by burning homes down and things of that nature. i dont think sony has ever had anything that bad (except the laptop batteries which sony might have just outsourced to begin with). so sorry i was not trying to be a  .

as far as the ps3 goes it's very solid. i dont remember the ps1 or 2 being this solid.
