Upgrading DirecTV Eqiup to HD & $

I thought I'd start a new thread on this.

The reps who answer your calls-- even the supervisors who get bumped up calls-- have a computer display screen that literally shows them what kind of offers/deals they are officially allowed to offer you. The $19.95 upgrade deal is no longer being offered at this time, at least right out of the gate. It was a deal they were offering to get people to switch over before the crowds arrived, and now the crowd is upon them, so..... no such deal will show up on their screens. There's too much demand and now that the HR20's have been largely debugged, they probably see it as bad business.

The best they will do--right out of the gates-- is to offer you something akin to a new customer signup of.... $100 bucks off the $299 cost of a new HR20. Now, if you are able to talk your way into a better deal than that, then kudos to you. You can always give it a try. Remember, if you do....

Be nice. Be calm. Be personal and understand the person at the other end of the phone is more likely to help you if you're sweet, funny, or charming. Do all that, and explain why you deserve the $19.95 (basically free) upgrade.... and see where it goes.

It also helps if you've been a long-time customer and what kind of packages you order. The more deeply you are into them, the more likely they'll want to retain your business.

Oh, by the way, I do have a new HR20 and I love it. I was afraid to give up my HR 10-250s, but I have to say there are some great features on the new receivers that I just adore. The 30 second skip ahead, which Replay used to feature, is excellent. Hit it 6 to 7 times in a row, and you have yourself as close to an automatic commercial skipper you're gonna ever see.

Peace, and good luck!

I've been with Directv for about 15 years. I did some monthly payment calculations, and figured what I've paid them for all my years of service. After about 1/2 hour waiting and being transferred, I got a younger sounding girl. I was polite, but firm about all the other offers I've gotten from Dish and Comcast cable, and how I've been promised more hi-def channels for a long time but have gotten nothing.
She put me on hold to see what she could do, and came back with this:
for one year, I get a $10.00 discount each month.
Free HBO and Showtime for 6 months
Free Cinemax for 3 months
Free HR20-700 DVR
another coax cable run from my satellite to my DVR inside my family room.

Installation will occur in about 3 days from now, on Sunday AM.
Not too bad! Just last night I did discover the additional HD channels on my original HR20 receiver; I don't know if that's a result of my call or just how it was timed. I was impressed with the response the Directv sales rep. had to my concerns; this works for me!

Hi folks,

If I decide to go with DTV, I will need a HD/DVR and a HD box. What model numbers of these should I make sure I get?

Anyone recently go from Comcast HD to DTV HD? Good decision?

Thanks!

I have been a directv customer for just over a year. I want to upgrade to HD and get eh HD DVR but I don't want to payy 299.00 for the HD DVR. I called customer retention and they said that is the fee for the install cause I need a new dish. has any one had any luck with upgrading to their hd dvr and not having to pay $299 for them to do it?

I've been a customer for coming up on 5 years, I have HD, TiVo (DVR, whatever, I pay the monthly fee whatever they brand it), NFL Sunday Ticket, HBO and college football and basketball.

I've called a couple times and gotten a brick wall -- they won't budge other than giving me $100 off (might have moved up to $150 off).

After paying $800 for the HD Tivo about three years ago, that really irks me.

I just got off the phone with "retention" I have been a customer for close to 10 years. I have the premium package, auto-pay, NFL Sunday Ticket, etc...Customer Service offered me $100 off of the HR20 and nothing off of the H20's. They moved me to customer retention...same thing.
I told them to cancel me then if that was the best he could do and without hesitation the guy says "ok". Wow if it wasn't for the Sunday Ticket I would be gone from these turkey's but they have me trapped.
