I have a 50" sony hd tv. I have direc tv but not the hd signal. I decided to finally get the hd signal. The technician came out today and hooked up a multi switch because I am running 2 standard dvrs and today I git an hr20 box for my hd tv. So he installed a Zinwell sam-4803 multi switch. This multi switch is powered so it has to be plugged into the wall. He said they also have a zinwell multi switch that doesen't have to be powered, but he isn't allowed to install them unless it is absolutely neccesary. He did say that the one that is not powered(the one that he didn't install) he said in his opion is a little better. Anyway everything is working fine I think? He called me about 2 hours after he left and told me he had 3 of those multi switches that he installed at my house on his truck and out of the 3 he had 2 of them he istalled after he left my house were bad. He wanted me to check my hd picture and see if it is ok. I never had hd before so I have nothing to compare it to. I guess it is ok. He said if I see anykind of signal loss he will come out and install the multi switch that doesen't need power. Apparently he says that that is the better anyway. I told him so far it looks ok. But then again I don't know what I am looking at. I don't want to run him out here if nothing is wrong. Can somebody tell me if a multi switch is defective would I still get a picture or would I get nothing. If it's bad can my picture be degraded a little bit. I would like ti try and get the best possible picture I can get. Am I just worried for nothing? Thanks for letting me bend your guys ear.

I can't believe these installers are this badly mis-informed! :thatsit THE ZINWELL SAM-4803 WILL NOT WORK WITH THE NEW MPEG4 HD CHANNELS! Only the Zinwell WB68 (non-powered) multiswitch is certified to work with the new HD channels starting this month!! Call the installer and tell him you need the Zinwell WB68 multiswitch, and don't let him install anything else but that.

Thanks for getting back to me. I will call the installer tommorrow and let him know that I want the other multi switch. So that means if I were to keep this one when the new hd channels get dropped I won't be able to receive them? Thanks again

You might and you might not get the new HD channels with the other multiswitches. Since they have not been certified, there are no guarantees. D* does not even mention multiswitches on their FAQ page about hardware requirements for the new HD channels. The CSR's are going to get a lot of calls from people with the wrong multiswitch!
