New guy needs some help

Hi fellas - love the forum.

I searched through 4-5 pages of threads in this forum and am still unclear about what to do in my particular situation.

I have a 42" Sony Grand Vega with only one DVI input. Currently I have my Motorola Cable Box running to it with the HDMI/DVI cable. I am going to add an HDDVD player to my setup as well, and I also plan on adding a new receiver with 3 HDMI inputs on it as well by November this year.

Would my best bet get an DVI switch box with 3-4 HDMI inputs on it?

Trying to get it in my head how this would work - on the output side of the switch box would go to my DVI input on the Vega, and then I could hook up receiver, cable box, and dvd player to it?

Would this work and could maybe someone steer me in the right direction of what DVI switch box I could get - preferably one with a remote.

Thanks guys and I'm sorry if this has already been answered somewhere else.

I checked monoprice.com for and HDMI-in to DVI-out switch and couldn't find one (but that doesn't mean it's no there). They have a bunch of HDMI switched at great prices.

Otherwise, if you can only get an HDMI switch, you plug all the inputs into the switch, run an HDMI cable out and then attach an HDMI to DVI converter onto the end of that HDMI cable and plug the DVI converter into the TV. Somewhat convoluted but the best I could come up with. Hopefully someone else may have a better solution.

Thanks rwdavis -

I didn't think about just getting an HDMI switch but I think that would work. I already have the HDMI to DVI cable - just run that to the input and run straight HDMI cables into the switch - pretty simple actually!

Does your TV allow for component inputs along with the DVI? You can run the component cables from your cable box and the HDMI/DVI cable from the HD DVD player as a cheaper work around until you get the 3 HDMI input receiver.

For audio, if your TV has optical or coaxial, you can use that from your cable box.

I only mention this to be a bridge until you get the receiver. After you get that, the HDMI switch will be a dust collector.

Good Point Stew - didn't think about that. Yes my LCD has component inputs as well. Think I will get the receiver first, then maybe get the HD-DVD player later.

I'm kinda curious about the Gen 3 Toshiba players getting ready to release.

Hopefully the release insn't far away. Have you been looking at the HD DVD Player and HD DVD/Blu ray Movies section on this forum? Lots of info.

Good luck :yippee:
