Setting up a WRT54GL router to go with 2 computers and 1 PS3

Hi, I am purchasing a 4-port router to connect two computers and a Playstation 3 to replace my old 2wire that only has 2 ports.

From lots of research, I have decided on the Linksys WRT54GL, and am planning to use the custom firmware DD-WRT v23 SP2.

I don't have Linux on my computers, just XP Home, will this work?

I am an extreme newbie to networking, so as long as I have everything I need to install this, I'll probably just get a professional to hook it all up and update the firmware, but I want to get everything they will need 1st.

Do I need Linux to upgrade the firmware? My computers run Windows XP Home.

Will I need an adapter for it, and if so, will I just need 1 for all three devices, or will I need a separate adapter for all three? I don't know if I can still use my old 2Wire adapters or if I'll need new ones for both computers?

Since I plan on making a corded connection rather than cordless, what kind of cable will I order to attach it to the computers and the PS3, is there a problem with using it at a distance of 20-25 feet?

I've heard many people talk about v6 and v8, is this the firmware or something else?

Any help would be very much appreciated...

I'm confused?

You say that you are replacing an old 2 port router. So why not just buy any 4 port router and swap out?

You mention your old 2-wire and 2-wire adaptors - what do you mean. Networks run on 8 wires (4 twisted pairs).

XP home should easily run a small network.

You should use CAT5 cables; they will easily run to 300' (I think that's right - 100m without another router).

I had to get a router that was compatible with the Playstation 3. It turned out that they have compatibility lists at Gamespot forum, and I am going to get the Linksys WRT54GL, and am planning to use the custom firmware DD-WRT v23 SP2.

Thanks for responding to my post, now I just have to start ordering everything!
