new add-on for the PS3 that allows you to record TV on the hard drive, and later upload to PSP

More details on Sony's new PlayTV

The info is flying fast today as Sony's launches a multi-tiered attack on the entertainment community. Luckily, we've got some additional info on the just announced PlayTV TV tuner / DVR for the PS3, and we'd like to share it. The unit will apparently be coming to Europe "early in 2008" with other territories to follow (PAL only for now). The new box will feature two 1080p tuners, which utilize the European Digital Video Broadcasting system (DVB-T) -- which should dash any US hopes for the time being. The system will allow you to store recorded broadcasts on your PS3 drive, and also transcode and transfer the saved files to your PSP. Additionally, you'll be able to use the PSP's "Remote Play" feature to program and watch your PlayTV away from home. Sony reps also make the bold pronouncement that the PlayTV architecture will "never be out of date" due to automatic network updates from the company. We're gutted that the US gets no love from Sony on this one, but it's a good time to be a European PlayStation 3 fan, that's for sure.

I think this has been confirmed for the US, but I'm not positive. Haven't been keeping up with PS3 news lately.

Europe was intentionally targeted because dvrs arent nearly as big over there as they are in the US.

there is no way sony will keep this out of the US. this is exactly what sony wanted to do with the psx but fell short. this will be a very good product idea if its done right. i dont want to keep my ps3 on when im watching tv. i just hate the idea of running my ps3 that much more. having an addon unit instead of a software update is great. im also wondering about cable card. the fact that is outputs 1080p doesnt squash it in the US. all they gotta do is have options for the output. the addon can convert the incoming singal to anything it wants just like our current cable boxes (only they dont support 1080p output but it is possible).

I agree as well.
The use of the PSP is outstanding! Record anything on TV and watch it as you travel (plane, train, automobile). Even for the kids in a car. Low cost alternative for the built in televisions for those back seat monsters! :hithere:

I don't have the PSP nor will I ever get one but I like it a lot!

This looks pretty interesting. I am always on the run, and it would be nice to upload CSI to my PSP for a later viewing. Unfortunately I am not going to go spend $500 bucks for the PS3 to have this ability.
