Do you have size restraints or know if you want 4:3 or 16:9? You have to start somewhere.

A lot of the review sites and sources name the 34" Sony KD34XBR960 as having the best picture. It costs $2199 and weighs 200 pounds.

I have the Sony XBR960 and there is nothing else like it. Great picture quality in HD and SD. Black levels are terrific.

I have the above referenced Toshiba 34hf84 and am generally happy with the SD and HD pictures. I had a space restriction for which only the Toshiba and Philips 34" sets fitted.
I think in asking your question you will generally get answers from people who have only one type of set and will probably defend their choice unless they are completely unsatisfied.
Finally, I was initially reluctant to go with a 16:9 set as a lot of my viewing is 4:3 but I do not regret the decision as all widescreen material, DVDs and HD, look fantastic.

Take it as the gospel, from someone who knows;
I have the Sony KD34XBR960/great set!
I also have the LOEWE 30" AVENTOS
Both are phenomenal, but the Loewe wins in every respect;
that includes HD/1080i/720p, DVD, & digital/local channels
I've been preaching LOEWE, on this web-site for months
It's FULL DIGITAL; nothing else on the market, even comes close
The reds, were so real on the Seabiscuit DVD, you felt like a crayola!
The HD signal is the closest thing to TV heaven on earth
The drawbacks are several:
Hard to find a dealer, or service technician; their customer service in Massachsetts, is a one-man show
Almost ludicrous, considering the price of the set
The Sony is great, but the Loewe is PERFECTION!

These are all fine TV's. They also each do some things better than the others. For example, one thing I love about the Toshiba 34HF84 is it's wonderful Theaterwide stretch. I hate black bars!! It also has a wonderful color decoder and fantastic black level. These things make it the best TV for me, maybe not for anyone else. I suggest that you decide which qualities are important to you, study the TV's and decide what your "best" TV is. If it was that cut and dried, there would only be one manufacturer out there.

You forgot one LITTLE thing: LOEWE has closed shop in the USA
