Hilarious, imagine camping with this set-up.. only to find you don't have enough battery to start the car in the morning.

Question:

If the Sony portable is low resolution...(320x200) does the input to the projector get better than that?

I doubt it, but still the best you can expect is 480i from its composite output anyway. A much better solution is a basic laptop, that will upconvert any dvd to 720p. When it comes to a big image....the higher the resolution, the better, and most projectors have vga (including the one they used).
