Question about dolby digital settings

I connected my HR20-700 to my Panasonic plasma using HDMI. I'm not using the tv speakers because I have a Sony DA1ES receiver for surround sound. The receiver doesn't have HDMI inputs so I connected HR20-700 to using the digital optical connection. When I watch an HD channel I get no sound from the receiver unless I go into the menu on the HR20-700 and turn off the dolby digital. The on-screen display on the receiver then shows PCM. What settings do I need to make on either the HR20-700 or the receiver to get the receiver to recognize the dolby digital output of the HR20-700? Or do I need to get a new receiver (which I'm leaning toward anyway) that has HDMI inputs so I can run the HR20-700 to it then to the TV?

The only thing I can think of is how you might have the function on your receiver set...say you used Video 1 to accept the signal from your HR20. That function can be set to accept analog/digital signals...the 'input mode' button your remote or the face of the receiver allows you to switch the format of audio to that function. Your choices might include the likes of dig coax, optical, analog, or auto. You need to have it set to optical.

This is about the only thing I can think of. Anyone else have an idea?

My Denon has a button to select PCM, Auto or DTS for whatever input is selected. For example, if it's set to PCM, then no matter what input I select it's going to look for a PCM only signal. Perhaps your Sony has something similiar. I usually leave mine set to Auto, then no matter what comes in signal-wise, it switches to accomodate it.
