Interference in DVD player

I have a Samsung DVD player through which I channel sound from a Hi Def TV, using the auxiliary function. From the first day, I found that the mood lighting in the room controlled by a rheostat caused a lot of interference. The easy way around that was to not use the rheostat. Now, and suddenly, the same loud purr is present without the use of the rheostat-controlled lights. Any ideas as to what might cause this, and more importantly is there any sort of fix, like a filter?

I don't understand exactly what components you have, and how they are connected. Would you go into a little more detail about what you have (TV, receiver, DVD player, gaming system, CD player, etc) and exactly how they are connected (toslink, coax, component video, HDMI, etc)?

Unless he's using wireless speakers, the rheostat should not interfere one bit. Me thinks he has a grounding problem.
