Wow, unbelievable.

The PlayStation 3 will debut at 425 in the UK in March and you can bet that the price won't change much until 2009 at the earliest.

That's the message coming out this week out of Sony, which has been on the defensive again after revealing that it was replacing hardware from the PS2 currently included in US and Japanese PS3s with software emulation.

In a report from Dow Jones, reprinted by Kotaku, Sony's Kimberly Otzman said that the PlayStation 3 would not be getting a price drop for at least another two years.

Otzman's comments echo those of Sony's Phil Harrison, who told GameDaily recently that the company isn't feeling any pressure to make it easier for customers to afford the new system.

Commenting on recent statements made by Sony's Jack Tretton, Harrison said that the company would be lowering the cost to make PS3s through research and development.

This would take the form of reducing the number of components in the system, such as the recent decision to drop completely the Emotion Engine and partly the Graphics Synthesizer - PS2 components included in the PS3. Sony admitted the move would mean that fewer PS2 games would be playable on European PS3s.

So much for making the PS3 cheaper to make, but when will buyers see the benefits of that? Not anytime soon, according to Harrison.

"At the appropriate time and when we can afford to, the business model of the industry is to pass those savings onto the consumer, but we're a long way away from doing that yet," he said.

Harrison added that there was no pressure on Sony to lower the retail price of the PS3 in 2007. He also said that Sony has no intention of reintroducing rumble to the PS3 controller.

I thought they just resolved their issues with Immersion over the rumble patents. I don't think Sony will have any choice but to drop the price of their PS3 over time. Market forces are going to dictate that either they drop the price, or the quantity sold will suffer heavily in the future. I would like to know what Microsoft has planned at this time, as they could really start putting the the vice grips on Sony at this time.

yeah says the company whom formally said BD players will not see price drops and then went ahead and announced a cheaper player in less then a weeks time. I think it is pointless to listen to these stupid announcements as they are never taken seriously by the company making them, no disrespect to you cygnus. I think as long as they keep this price they will never have the highest market share, so it would be wise of them to realize demand is low and just drop the price already, hopefully by summer so that I can pick up spiderman alongside it (have a hunch that it will releases soon after or at the very least announced after part 3 comes out).

A price drop from M$ would be nice, and would definately put Sony in a vice, but do they really have to lower it??

ouch really?! what idiots those are and worst idiots for buying them when there in stores lol... it'll be odd if sony does not drop the price until 2009 ouch!.. with the way PS1 and PS2 went.. i would guess a price drop by end of 2008. .. that'll put it to 2yrs on the market while both PS1 and PS2 had price drops within 2yrs.

I've noticed that as well around here too. Maybe these were the suckers who stockpiled on PS3's thinking they were going to cash in big, only to find that they couldn't sell the frickin things.

i hope this doesn't deter M$ from cutting the price of the xbox360 when the updated version comes out. if they want to really leap WAY ahead of sony, they would be smart to have a pricecut on the current system if in fact an updated system comes out this year.

sony on the other hand is a company filled with absolute morons. didn't we read an interview about a month ago from one of the sony execs saying that the ps3 would be profitable by the end of this year?? whatever happened to that? seems like sony is getting greedy and still expect the ps3 to sell on brand name alone, leaving lots of potential ps3 owners to sit and wait even longer before they can afford to get a ps3. i know everyone keeps saying the ps3 is a great bargain at $600 since it has a blu-ray drive, but we have to remember one important thing (the most important thing)....a majority of gamers are just that, GAMERS. they are not looking to get a discounted blu-ray player, they are looking for a gaming system and having to pay $600 for a gaming system makes NO SENSE FOR A GAMER!!! no matter how many times everyone keeps saying "sure it's $600, but you get blu-ray", that really doesn't make a difference to someone who is an avid gamer but can't see spending an ADDITIONAL $200-$300 for a console that they want to use for GAMING......

sony will never realize this, or maybe they have, but they just don't want to admit that they forgot to focus on the biggest target group out there....the pure gamer!
