DVE calibration with RPTV

I calibrated my set with DVE through a Sony upconvert. I calibrated the set and wrote the settings down. I then used a cheap DVD player and got different settings. I then tried the DVE with a Toshiba XA-1 HD player and got even another set of calibrations.
My question is: Am I calibrating the DVD players or the tv? To correctly calibrate the tv shouldn't the signal source come FROM the tv? Or a technician?
Since three different DVD players gave a different set of calibrations on the same tv, isn't then using DVE bogus as far as calibrationg for a tv program? Is it just for calibrating the DVD player? Or am I missing something?

what you are actualy doing is calibrating the input. you are gonna get different settings from hdmi and component. you are also gonna get differnet settings from hd sources and sd sources. even though you upconverting dvd player upconverts its still not hd so you will get a different reading. doesnt your tv save the settings for each indavidual input? just calibrate each input to what the dvd says it should be then go back and see if you like the picture. if not then just use those settings as a starting point. you also gotta remember there are different calibration dvds for hd.

All in user menu?

bboncorr is on target that different inputs will have different results at times. Are you calibrating to the same input?
Am I calibrating the DVD players or the tv

In a perfect world, how the display presents data from whatever source you are feeding it.

One of the reasons ISF techs calibrate the display from a signal generator is to attain a "baseline" from which we can make small moves to adjust from different sources. Whether this sig/gen is a mega buck standalone device or a reputable numbers cruncher like the Oppo, matters not.

What does matter is that the datastream you have runningmeasures to standards. This can be verified with measurements.
