I just can't believe it... I get home this afternoon and Wham! the XBOX360 is apparently DOA 3 flashing red lights in the "ring of light"
I call the customer service rep he tells me to unplug the cables and remove the hard drive reconnect and power up to see if the problem is fixed......no go He tells me microsoft will fix the console at no charge just mail it to them...Now, I have a friend who sent in his console in OCT still not back!... I gotta be honest this is the third (3) XBOX product I have had 2 regular and now this 360 all of them have given problems 2 died....So I tell the rep forget it just give me Bill Gates address and I will send the pieces to him....I still have my PS2 five years old and still going strong never locks up never refuses to work...heck my ps1 would prob still work if I still had it!!!
any suggestions on fixing this problem myself before I take a sledgehammer and put the 360 out of its misery!!!!

Send it in and get it replaced. Don't send in the hard drive or any accessories/cables - just the console itself.

Relax. You'll have a new one in under two weeks, more than likely.

That's pretty stupid and irrational, if you ask me (and no one has.) You can get a replacement for free but won't, just to show you're mad. Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face...

its a litle like buying a Ford repeatedly and always having it breaking down on the way to work or maybe when transporting your kid to the emergency room after owning 3 models with no success I finally decided to switch to a Toyota or a Honda I don't need to support Microsoft anymore they have convinced me they put out an inferior product..........PS2 still going after 5 years

Give me a break. What a shitty analogy. You being without the 360 for a couple of weeks is hardly along the same lines as being stranded on the side of the road with a hurt kid.

How is taking advantage of a one-year warranty supporting Microsoft? You've already supported them by purchasing the console. Why would you possibly refuse a replacement? No one says you have to buy anymore games, but why deny yourself the pleasure of playing just because you're pissy?

You really need to stop whining. Electronics break down. It happens. That's life. Microsoft is willing to take care of it for you free of charge and yet you still bitch.

Someone go call the waaaaaambulance.

my friend had to ship his back twice, he paid for shipping. though maybe its cause his warranty ran out.

I'm willing to bet that the next time you are about to lay down some cash for a new flat panel it wont be with panasonic....you will most likely go with sony or sharp wont you.....now be honest.....look I 've enjoyed XBOX great game titles Halo, Morrowind/Oblivion heck I was playin Rainbow Six vegas today I'M not an online gamer but apparently Xbox does that better than anyone else.....my prob is with the Hardware i'm batting 1000 here 3 XBOX consoles 3 defective machines...

What kind of a response were you looking for?

How long did you have your other Xbox's before they broke? I've owned 2 original's and only had a few DDE's with one of them, but it works for the most part. My 360 has been great.

I don't see what you are looking for. When you have a broken product and the company you bought it from is willing to fix it, let them fix it. In all your analogies, you just show that this IS the action you should take and you just won't buy their next version.

But.. to each his own.. do whatever you want, its your loss if you just don't do a thing.

Again, your analogy is flawed. You're not going to lay down any more cash. It's a free repair/replacement. It costs you nothing.

By all means, never spend another dime with MS if that's your choice. But why would you refuse a free replacement? It makes no sense whatsoever. It just doesn't.

Quit bitching and send it back. Or, quit bitching and throw it away. Either way, who cares?

FWIW - I own two 360s. One I've owned since last February and I've had zero problems with it. Zero. You have a defective unit and MS is willing to take care of you. Cry me a friggin river.

actualy the percentage of broken ps2s was so high it ended up going to court. sony blamed it on people playing to many dvds but in the end it turned out to be a bad design and sony not accounting for the lighter purple disks. kinda funny since sony wanted companies working with those purple disks for some reason. the ps2 was by far the most defective system ever made but it was my favorite system prior to owning a 360. a few game sites did post a method to get around the "disk read error" by putting clear tape on each side of the center hole.

if you want more info then do a search on these key words,

sony, ps2, disk read error, purple disk, and civil action.

i had them one but i unplugged the system waited about 30 seconds and restarted it with no problems after. i wonder if you getting enough ventalation to the console and the power pack. you also gotta consider that ms admitted some of the systems where not made of the highest quality because they used so many different manufacturers for the disk drive. maybe you got one of those bad disk drives. also dont sony didnt do the same thing with the ps3 since there where basicaly doing the same thing during the ps3 launch.

It would be one thing if you were outside of your one-year warranty period and you were paying for the repairs. This is not the case. You're being an unreasonable whiner. Either throw it away or send it to be replaced for free. Either way, just stop whining over trivial things.

im a 3x "scumbag" if thats the case. hell i even returned a sega dreamcast for a ps2 days before dreamcast officialy took there systems off the shelfs. i couldnt belive walmart didnt know dreamcast had announced it wasnt gonna be making anymore systems and they took my system back for $200 in walmart gift cards and that went toward a ps2 5 minutes later.

i only take advantage of the system if i feel im being cheated and didnt bother doing it again when my ps2 wouldnt read madden because it was a purple disk.

he does have a point though. you cant blame ms for you not taking advantage of getting a new system. with all electronics esp. the first batch comes issues. as time goes on there will still be problems but there alot more limited and ms has owned up to the problems by doing something no other company (atleat that i can recall) would ever consider.

worst case would be you send it in then get it back then sell it to gamestop or ebgames for a down payment on a ps3. heck i hear the shelfs are loaded at this point so you should have no trouble getting one.

It's 2007 and you're still crying over a couple of original XBOXs dying back in the day? Good god man. Get over it.

Of course you didn't ask for the console to break down. You know what? Shit happens. It's not like MS is telling you to take a flying leap, are they? No. They're saying they'll take care of you. All you have to do is get off your butt and take it to the post office. If you're too lazy/stubborn to that, piss on you. Let the thing rot in your living room. Who cares? You act as if you're the first person to have a console die on them. You also act as if MS is the only company to make consoles that have died on people.

Your pissing and moaning has grown tiresome. You're out of your element.

i have to agree with some of the people saying you should just quit whining and send it in for the FREE replacement. if you have it under warranty, what is the big deal? it's not like ms is the only one having problems with their consoles, the ps2 was WELL KNOWN for breaking down....that is why sales of them are still ridiculuously high, because people have otns of games for their broken ps2, and are buying new ones to replace the broken ones instead of dishing out $600 for a new ps3 that has like 25 games.

when i bought my 360, i paid tne extra $50 to get the bestbuy 3year replacement warranty because i knew that with a brand new next-gen consoles, there could be problems. i'm sure there are going to be a lot of ps3 problems also, and if you actually check ps3 forums, there are a LOT of people reporting glitches or freezing, but these posts seem to get deleted by the administrators like 15 minutes after they are made....kind of interesting....

Ok, I have a couple of comments, suggestions.

1. Was your 360 left on?
2. Are the cables plugged ALL the way in?

Try this (may seem stupid, but do it anyways) Plug in everything, but keep the HD OFF, and turn the console ON. After it is turned on (presumably flashing the 3 red lights) unplug the component cable! THEN plug the component cable back in WHILE THE MACHINE IS STILL ON and see if it fixes the flashing lights.

Come back after you have tried that.

yeah my 360 has frozen up only twice in the 14 months that i have owned it. the second time was actually today when my wife and i were playing on it. people just need to realize that all electronics have glitches, especially gaming consoles since people use them for hours and hours at a time. my only annoyance is that sony fans and ps3 fans seem to think that the ps3 has absolutely no problems, yet if you check the forums, they do, just like the xbox360...plus the ps3 just came out, so lets see how many problems getting recorded within the next year...

I'm not one of those that think there won't ever be problems with electronics. Very disappointed with the battery with our Ipod, the tuner for our HR10-250's leave a lot to be desired, my original PS2 crapped out and our 360 has been mailed to Microsoft twice. Not bitching, I just understand that there will be problems, regardless of the maker.

It does seem odd to have problems with all three xboxs'?

Does the area you live in have any unusual power problems such as low voltage or high voltage conditions?

Is your house old? Some old homes have combined neutral and ground connections, or have to much load on one circuit.

Mine froze up once too. Still haven't figured out why, but doesn't seem to be a continuing problem. My son was also complaining about load times on one of the xbox 360 games he plays. I only play first person shooters and racing games, both systems seem to kick butt on those games.

Could be your problem is something else entirely?!? Maybe your consoles are burning up because your HT setup has them fitting too 'snugly' (i.e. bad air circulation) into place? Maybe there is too much humidity in the air (can be fixed with a dehumidifier) or static from your AV receiver....either way I would suggest you take it back, have M$ fix it--on THEIR dime--and sell that puppy off to help pay for your PS3 glory.
