I am trying to decide which one is better for me. I have 2 situations the family room I have a Toshiba 50H81 which is only component and the 970hd has component the bedroom I have a Philips 23" lcd hidef that has DVI. I am thinking that the 970 will go between if I need to. Please help

The 971 only inferior component quality compared with the 970, but slightly better HDMI upscaled video.
The 970 has SACD and DVD-A outputs for music. The 971 only has DVD-A.

I were buying today I would go with the 970H. Much more versatile player at a lower price.

I would go with the 970H also. The 971H has horrible PQ over component and many 971H owners have said that a $30.00 PS player outperforms it over component. Sinc eit MAY be hooked up to the Toshiba via component, I would definately go with the 970H model.

Ok I finally got the 970HD and hooked it up. What a difference and what advice to go with Oppo. I am truly amazed at the difference from my old progressive scan DVD. The component to my 50H81 was a little better but I have heard of a hack out there to get that will make it much better any one try it

You do know about the firmware hack that allows 720/1080 upconversion over component, don't you? I would definitely use that firmware hack!

Be careful. It should be a converted ISO file. If you go on the Oppo Digital support site it explains how updates are to be loaded on the machine.
You could do harm if you don't follow the instructions.

Definitely read the instructions that Oppo provides! If you don't know how to do it, don't do it.

While it will (970h) upconvert to 1080i over component, most DVD's have a copyright protection algorythum that keeps the DVD's at 480p max.

Actually the 613A Mod will allow upscaling reguardless of DVD.
Here is a thread devoted to the 970:

I Stand Corrected!!!

Just burned the new firmware, ran it in my Oppo field unit. It is doing something it never did before. Upconverting to 1080i THRU component.

The info is still pretty fresh at AVS. Most threads from the last few days. Man... this stuff changes faster than the yellow light on Division street.

Thanks 5.

Great heads up!

Just an footnote for those that might be interested.

My display has the misfortune of being one that exhibits a significant red push from the factory. I've attenuated the component Pr connection to the display to compensate and allow me to fully saturate the other primary colors.

My display also has separate SM controllable parameters for the 480i/p signals and 1080i. For me to use the "upsampling" from the oppo I have to change the service parameters which is easily done. Now I'll have to also attenuate the signal from my Sat feed which I was able to get prety close without the use of an attenuator to match the output from the oppo. No problem, but....

When completed, the resolution gain at 6Mhtz is only slightly above that which I get with the oppo outputting 480p. A person would have a real problem with an a/b video test using actual material.

Once again, upsampling of 480i proves to be of dubious worth if you are already viewing a finely set up 480p display. Just an FYI,
