Corruption of 480p/720p/1080i inputs?

When using any non-standard definition input signal, including 480p and HD, the image on the screen of my 32" Zenith C32V37 HDTV shows lots of blocking and a generally poor image, with bad coloring especially in flat areas. It is most noticeable on either of my progressive scan dvd players' background logos (the image seen without a disc or when stopped). When the input is S-video or component 480i, the image looks fine, having well defined edges of the logo text and proper coloration. When I turn on progressive scan on the dvd player, the corruption appears. I have tried another good component cable and get the same effect with both of my players. My new dvd player's DVI connection has the same problem in either 480p or 720p and 1080i upscaling modes. I turned off velocity modulation, but no help. The distortion seems far more severe than any effect of VM. Why would my HDTV be having such trouble with progressive and HD signals? Has anyone had this problem? Thanks for any insight!

Note: The blocking reminds me of mpeg blocking and occurs like clouds around the text of my Denon's logo text. It looks very much like some kind of heavy digital processing gone bad. It is less noticeable with video playing, but it is still affecting moving video.

I have messed around with this TV in stores... the only thing I could possibly think of is perhaps the Scan Mode setting is interfering?
