I didnt hook it up yet but i have a question guys, the 2 rear speakers should be behind my head right? but should they be in an angle towards my ears? or just stright up facing the tv? im gonna have 2 speakers in the middle of the room, 1 in the left and 1 in the right and 3 speakers in the sides of the TV(center speakers on tv stand below TV) and subwoofer will be in the very left side of the room, will that be a good way to set up the speakers? or it basically doesnt matter as long as its surrounding me?

Here's the setup for a 7.1 system, I hope it helps. Try to google 7.1 surround setup diagram.

yes i saw that pic yesterday, i believe thats what im gonna do, im gonna have to buy stands for the 2 front speakers tho yea? i mean i dont have a place to mount them because my tv is in an angle and i dont want to mount the speakers on the wall behind the tv, it wouldnt make sense and exactly near the tv theres a window so what are my options? only to get 2 stands?

I would go with stands all around. Some people don't like them but i personally think they make the setup look badass. Plus they allow you to move the speakers around and point them anyway you need. Also if you or your significant other is anything like me a mine, we like to rearrange furniture and our setup occasionally. Speaker stands make this alot easier.

yes but how much do the stands cost? i already have stands for the 2 rear speakers , i believe the 2 surround speakers ill need to mount and for the front 2 ill need to buy 2 stands?

I saw some at wall mart last week but I didn't check a price. I would say in the 20 - 30 dollar range for a set of 4 maybe. I don't recall them being very much.

Go to under audio and then HTIB. All the info about this system and others that you need. Don't rely on the CC people.

I have the 790 and it is very nice for the price. I works awesome with 360, and I would assume PS3 as well. But I have it in my family room (20x15). The sub rocks bigtime and rattles the windows and floor when I crank it.. My only concern is being in an apartment, you will not be able to crank it much. Even at half power, my guess is that you neighbors and wifey will not be happy. They 590 if less power, but quite ample for your situation ($269).. If you think you can crank it without issues, or plan to move into a house in the next year or 2, I would go with the 790. If not, the 590 has 3 digital inputs so that will do the trick for PS3/360 DVD.. And the smaller speakers might fit better for your situation. The 790 speakers are bigger, but have much better sound depth.

Thanks for the insight....unfortuantly my wife will not let me get this system yet...b/c we have "more important" things to get right now...we're moving in tomorrow actually. I was gonna pair this up with a 720p 32in Sammy LCD and later get either the 40 or 46in 1080p set. Since I will most likely miss the sale for the 5.1 @$269 + I have a $40 off coupon, im a little mad right now. Maybe in a couple months the 7.1 will be a lil more cheaper?...

But damn @ $239 using my coupon is very, very temtping..but if i get it I will piss off the wife!...lol

If you really want to piss her off. Get it, rap it and put it under the tree to her from you with love. Christmas morning would be priceless.

BTW, I paid like $479 for the 790 almost a year ago on sale. It is now $439, so it won't go up. It is well worth the extra $170 IMO over the 590, but if your are not able to utilize it (more power baby) , the 590 will do the trick. Pehaps ask the freinds and family for CC giftcards for Xmas and pull the trigger then.

yeah, I may not be able to utilize its full potential in the apt, but the box is huge I wouldnt know where to hide it...lol

the 5.1 is a deal @$239 my only gripe is that it doesnt come in black. I have 3 days to until the sale ends...man o' man im tempted.

Do u have pix of ur set up?

I have pics but can't postem. The font anyway with my 50'' plasma on the stand with the Onkyo and front speakers. I think it is because the file is too big. I have a 6mp camera and even at the lowest res and compressed, the file is quite large. All I can say is it looks and sounds sweet. My friends can't believe all that comes from this. I have a tri level house. I can easily make my wife bitch when she is 2 stories up playing COD3 on 360. I only have it set up as a 5.1 now.

Bigloww as well (have to use 2 ww because Biglow is always taken :D ). I don't have GOW yet. Only because I am promised as a Xmas gift along with the HD DVD addon. So I had to promise not to buy it. That is when I bought COD3. I might rent it to get my feet wet b4 Xmas. I hope allot of people get it on Xmas too. If not, I am going to get my as wiped for a while online.

Bigloww are u using the monster optic fiber cable or the gameshark optic fiber cable? i got the gameshark one and it doesnt pop in at all(its a common problem so im not alone) im gonna get the monster optic cable for 360 yesterday, which one u using? and do u use the monster component cables aswell or u just use the factory HD component cables that comes with the premium package?

Bigloww

I just use typical cable. I got my original Acoustic Research cable at BB or CC a while back for around $18. I also got a couple 6 ft. cable at monoprice for like $5. Both worked great. That moster cable will work fine. And yes, I use the component cable that came with my 360.

If you are asking about the optical fiber cable, it is to get digital Dolby Digital or DTS via your 360 for games and movies. It improves you gaming audio quite a bit. It just plugs into the top of your 360 cable to your SS reciever. You can get 1 for like $10 or $15. You can also use the RCA audio (red and white) to your reciever, but it is not as good.

And are you asking if the sound is better through the Onkyo than your TV? If so, the answer is HELL YES!! COD3 for example is amazing. Bullets zipping in 1 speaker, people yelling in English in another, German in another and a plane coming over your head. And man that sub makes the explosions seem almost real when it is cranked up..

So theres a optical fiber cable input on the 360? damn, never paid attnetion to that. can u point me in the direction of a good one? So, its better than using the red & white inputs that are on the HD cables that come with the 360? And to hook it up I would just plug in the grn/blue/red cables then plug in the optical fiber cables while leaving the red&white unplugged? Sorry for so many questions as I learning about this stuff as I go.

I still didnt get the S590 or 790 yet...S590 is still on sale @ CC for 260 and I think I can still a $40 off coupon on top of it...what to do!?!?!?!

The optical cable output on your 360 is located where your cables input into the 360. On this cable, look at the end, you can see the input on the flat part:

http://img.alibaba.com/photo/50639637/Component_AV_with_Optical_Output_Multifunction_Cab le_for_XBOX_360.jpg

You can pick up an optical cable at CC, Best Buy, Staples, even department stores like Wal mart and Sears. Should be able to get one for $20 or less. They should all be the same. Wal mart sells the Phillips brand cables which are good quality.

Monoprice is a great place to get good quality cables for very low prices campared to the brick and mortor stores. They have a special on a 3 ft. cable today for 93 cents and a 6 ft for around $5. I use em and so does allot of others on here. Good stuff. You can rab all the cables you need in 1 order/shipment.

Here's a $10 cable sold at walmart, didn't find a pick of the phillips brand, but I know they have them as well:

You shouldn't have to order online, this is a purchase you can make in any electronics store and most major department stores like Sears, Walmart, Kmart, Staples, Best Buy, Circuit City, etc..

And they are cheap enough to buy in a store. Only order online if you simply don't have the time to go to a store. This is a typical cable and can easily be found. Called "digital optical/toslink" cable.

I didn't say he has to order online, just a cheaper option. I would agree that going to Sears or CC is fine too. Especially if you only need 1 thing and need it now. But since he does not even have his system yet places like monoprice is a very good option if he wants to save a chunck of money. He can order everything he needs/wants now. A couple optic cables (93 cents a piece :yippee: ), some 16 guage speaker wire, and say a HDMI cable if he needs it. That will save him a least $50 over even Walmart. Just giving a new guy a great option if he wants it.;)

Straight on.. Sound advice. I didn't know his situation fully. Online is a great place to buy things, monoprice included. I was thinking he had all of his equipment all ready and onl needed a single cable.

In my case I ususally go to a store as I typically want instant gratification. Saving 5 to 10 bucks to me is of no concern when I can get what I want in 20minutes instead of several days. But if he needs multiple cables and has to wait anyways then online is a good place to go to save money if you don't mind waiting for a shipment.

I also have the 7.1 Onkyo system. Happy with it.

Couldn't beat what I got for the price of $400. About a year & half ago.

These are the stands I got for my rears.........omnimount.

I bought them at Radio [email protected]

Quick question about the 360 optical connection...

If you connect the optical cable, are the red and white audio cables disabled? I.e. If I have the RCA's hooked up to the TV and the optical going to a receiver, will both the tv and receiver sound work at the same time, or will only one work at a time.

I want to have my 360 hooked up to the sound system, but I know there will be times I just want to use the tv speakers. Just curious if I am looking at more than just volume control. Thanks in advance.

I bought 2 cables from Monoprice.com and they both arrived within 48 hours at 1/4 the price of Monster. I just could not believe the speed in which they were delivered to the East Coast!

Do you lose and picture quality by running a component connected DVD player through the receiver on the HT-S790 or is it better to just leave it connected to the TV?
