banding question?

Hello...is banding possible with plasma screens? I think I might have the term mixed up. I was watching what seemed to be a compressed HD video downloaded from xbox live. At certain points if you look closely...it seems as though the sky background isn't a smooth gradient, but gradated in steps. almost like really compressed video. Also this can be seen on the opening xbox 360 animated logo when you first power on. The grayish gradient isn't smooth as can be. I then watched a regular DVD later on, and all gradients and colors seemed to be smooth as can be. Is this banding I am seeing just from the source material and how it was compressed / created? Is it even called banding?

That's not the same thing as vertical banding, which looks like the screen has been equally divided into bands of alternating subtle light and dark shades of the image. The clearly defined gradation you see in sky is the result of high compression. There is another term for this and I've forgotten what it's called. It's from the source and not your display.
