Hi everyone. I recently purchased a 42' LCD Olevia TV. I am waiting for it to arrive. My question is is it worth it to invest in one of those calibration DVDs? I forget what they are called? Avis? Has anyone used the DVDs to calibrate? What were your thoughts or can you achieve the same results with playing the setting out of the box. Thanks alot. I look forward to hearing from you.

Depends on how experienced you are at setting up the PQ on televisions. The DVD's are cheap so they are worth giving a shot. You should be able to find them for $20. You also can use any DVD in your collection that has calibration software in it. Try a Star Wars movie and look through the menus to find it.

You should note that the AVIA and DVE discs are only a starting point and you may have to make furthur adjustmenst. I personally did not like the PQ I got using the discs. It looked too dull to me. I had to brighten it up afterwards.

Avia

DVE

You should be able to find a calibration disc at Best Buy or Circuit City. I know for a fact BB carries a calibration disk, it may not be one of these two but I'm sure it would work just fine. I wouldn't lose any sleep over having one though, it's not like these discs are magic or anything. I find them only really usefull for someone who really has no clue how to adjust a tv. All it does is show you how to adjust the color, brightness, contrast, etc. Most people are perfectly capable of making these adjustments on thier own anyways.

But.... like I said, they're ralativly inexpensive so give them a shot, they are a bit fun to play with for 20 minutes.

Thanks alot, I appreciate it. Any thoughts on this setup.....

Olevia 42' LCD (has HDMI and 3 component inputs)

Xbox360 (component connection)

bose 321 system ( s-video connection)

RCA DVD upconverting recorder ( HDMI input as well as component)

What do you think is the best way to connect all of this to get the best out of them all.. Thanks.

I would connect them exactly how you have them listed!!

The only thing you didn't list is a HD Cable box or Satellite reciever. I would connect this via Component as well. Some box's come with HDMI outputs, in this case you would have to decide what is more important to you; Having the DVD player or the box connected via HDMI.

I would go with what you had though.

oh ya.. I forget to mention an H20 box from DTV. That box does have a HDMI connection... Do you think it is better to use component to the TV and HDMI from the TV to the DVD player?

so how does this sound:

H20 to TV via component?

DVD to TV via HDMI?

bose to TV video S video (b/c that is all it has & then optical cable from bose to H20 for TV sound through the Bose?)

Xbox 360 to TV via component?
