Any reason why you're specifically looking at the Philips? Personally I'm not impressed with the ambilight concept...more of a gimmick without any real benefits. Have you had a chance to check out Sharp or Sony LCDs?

Actually it does work if you give it a chance. The theory is that the backlight will draw your attention to the outside of the screen causing a person to look at the whole screen. In most cases a persons attention is focused on the center portion of the screen.

No offense, but that sounds a little retarded. IMO, it reeks of a gimmicky idea that the TV manufacturers thought would set them apart. The whole theory about drawing your attention away from the center of the screen seems a little far-fetched.

I could be wrong, but that seems lame. Can you shut the backlight off, or is it always on?

I don't buy it either. I pretty much enjoy the entire screen area now without any aid.

^^^^ I did not design this display ;) , just letting you know what I was told by a Philips rep. This feature can be turned off. This light can be left on while the unit is off too, in white .

Check out the LG 37LC2D. The specs are great, it has a great build quality, and has a fantastic picture. There is also up to 500.00 mfg. rebates for TV and add ons available here through 12/9.

The rebates will continue, but they go down after the 9th.
Here is the set ..great looks, great picture, great specs. The design actually won an award for the 42" size.

I know you didn't design it. I was just saying their explanation was retarded.

I'm glad you can turn it off, otherwise it would be an automatic deal breaker for me. Thanks for the info.

the real theory of the ambilight feature in philips tv's is that the ambilight is supposed to produce a soft color around the tv in order to reduce eye strain when viewing the tv in a darkly lit room. i am not sure who or where you heard your theory from, but if it was a philips rep, then he clearly was not conveying the proper information to you. if you go to the philips website and read articles online about ambilight, it clearly states that it reduces eye strain, and nothing more. i find the feature somewhat decent...not a big fan, but not a hater of it either. as long as they give you the option of turning the feature off or on, i have no big complaints about it.

Personally I'm more concerned with whats happening on the screen than whats going on behind it......WOW me there...

Bama,

What's with LG's site, still can't get any information on Authorized Dealers?

Actually what's left since CC, BB, 6th Ave, CompUSA and RadioShack are excluded?
