Upconversion Technology

Does a lcd with upconvertion technology give you a better sd picture?Does anyone here know if it is a plus to have this technology in a new tv?thks in advance for any responce,I'm looking at the 40"samsung/with upconvertion technology and a 1080p set.

All HD TV's have to have upconversion technology in order to display SD. The HD tvs have more "lines" of pixels than the SD provides so the missing lines have to be "filled in". Some TV's do this a little better than others. I was at a local store yesterday and had them feed all the sets with analog so I could evaluate this function. All the sets did it pretty well. The salesman claimed Panasonic and Hitachi do it better. The Panasonic did look good. One of the Sony LCD looked better than the other.
