Need help please

Hi all. I need your help please - I'm a newbie when it comes to audio/video setup. I have a DirecTV Tivo box and DirecTV/Tivo service. I just bought a Sony LCD TV, and when I hooked it up this afternoon, it was unable to pick up any digital channels. All it's picking up are analog channels. Do I need to upgrade my box to an HD box? Do I need to upgrade my subcription in order to view digital channels?

Thanks in advance.

Luke

Yes you need to upgrade to an HD receiver. But you may want to do some research on D*'s current changes to HD service before you decide what to do.

...and when you say you are unable to pick up any digital channels are you trying with an antenna?

Post your TV make and model, too, please.

Hi VegasFlyby. Thanks for your quick reply. I have a Sony Bravia S-Series 46" LCD TV. I don't have an antenna. Basically, I just used the VHF/UHF cable that came with the TV and hooked it up to my DirecTV box. When I first turned the TV on, it did the whole auto-channel thing. Then it asked if I wanted to search for Digital Channels. After searching, it said it couldn't find any digital channels. Could it be my connection? What kind of antenna are you referring to?

Thanks again,
Luke

You have the same TV that I do. What your TV did was search for OTA (over the air) digital signals. This has nothing to do with DirecTV. If you want to try to pick up OTA signal you need to hook up your TV to an antenna. What is your zip code?

My zip code is 20105.

Basically it tells you where the TV towers are in relation to your house. I would suggest trying an indoor UHF/VHF antenna and see what you can get. Just make sure you buy if from a store that will let you return it if it doesn't work. Hook it up and do another scan...and see what happens!

Now....if you want to get some HD thru DirecTV, that's another issue altogether.

I'd reccomend calling DirecTV and see what they are offering. Just note...they are in the middle of switching to newer satellites to offer HD locals, but it's not available in all markets. It also requires equipment upgrades. I don't know much about this since it's not available in Las Vegas yet. So if anyone else wants to chime in on this feel free. There's also a lot of information on these forums about the new DirecTV HD satellites and equipment requirements.

Okay, thanks! I'll check into getting an antenna. Will check with DirecTV too to see if I can upgrade to HD.

Thanks again for your help. I appreciate it.

Thanks! I'm loving the TV so far - except for the analog reception.
